I read that book many years ago, 7 Days in May. Can’t recall seeing the movie though. But yes sometimes I will catch an older movie I ‘thought’ I wanted to watch and it is just meh. Or maybe one I saw years ago and really loved but now not so much. Several musicals come to mind that really, except for the music, aren’t really that great imo.

We’ve been watching film noir and a lot of them are really good but there are a few boners in there.

I am old enough to have trouble calling anything after the mid 50's an "old" movie. I'm a fan of the 30's and 40's stuff. Somehow I'd never even consider watching a 1968 Shattner movie. Nothing about that sounds remotely good.

Amazon Prime has a bunch of movies available right now that I will call teeny bopper movies. They are from all eras. I tried to watch one called, I think, Rock, Rock, Rock with Tuesday Weld, but I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes. There are some real clunkers out there.

I don't consistently like movies of any era- like everything else, a bell curve describes the range of "likeability". Some older movies are awful, some new ones are terrific, and those and every other possibility applies to movies of all periods.

How do you watch old movies? I went to a Bette Davis festival in San Francisco at the Castro Theater back in the early 1980s, and Bette showed up for the first movie, along with a lot of Bette impersonators, which she seemed to like. The Egyptian Theater here shows a lot of vintage movies, but that involves us having to go to Hollywood and paying as much for parking as the movie costs. We tend to watch movies on disc now, or else I record them from cable on DVR, but seldom watch them in real time when they are shown. Most of them I record from TCM, but in the 1990s, channel 13 here used to show what it called vintage movies, which in Los Angeles meant anything more than 20 years old! Back then I recorded them on VCR and only had an antenna, as I did not want to pay for cable. When I did get cable, I started making DVDs of old movies from TCM for my mother because my father would not let her get cable. I still have a DVD recorder but it's not connected to my TV anymore.

If you are interested in Film Noir, a friend of mine, Mark Vieira wrote a book about it that you may like. Mark also occasionally has screenings at his photography studio in Hollywood, and sometimes I go there and watch the movies with him. Sometimes he visits me, and we watch movies on my TV.

My brother and I have different tastes in movies - he likes action movies, especially new ones based on comic book characters, but for me they are too violent. I like a lot of movies from the 1960s, and especially Italian ones. At this point, I sort of do consider movies from the 1970s to be vintage now, but not the 1980s. Mark's book focuses on movies from the 1940s, but he has a large collection of film reels from the 1930s and likes to show "pre-code" movies at his studio, which is what his latest book is about. He has a cat that I am allergic to, and so that is another issue.

I like movies more by the actors than the genres. Just about anything with Audrey Hepburn, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Dustin Hoffman, Bruce Willis, James Garner, etc. Too many to name but the movies from the 60's, 70's were good as far as I'm concerned.

We now subscribe to The Criterion Channel (lots of excellent films) and recently saw a previously unknown to us film noir, In a Lonely Place with Humphrey Bogart. In addition to viewing the film you can access critiques.

I watch a lot of old movies, especially on TCM, and if I haven't heard of one that looks promising I look it up on IMDB ( https://www.imdb.com/) to see what past and current critics have had to say about it.

Some movies/tv shows/books age well; others do not. Such is life.

I love TCM, and will check the schedule in advance to record anything new or that I like and haven’t seen in awhile. I really enjoy their Noir Alley movies, and obscure foreign or predominantly Black films.

When I was living in San Diego and working the night shift, I couldn't sleep on my nights off and spent many of them watching old movies on (IIRC) channel 9 out of Los Angeles. It seems to me it was mostly old RKO movies from the 30's and 40's, which I enjoyed -- maybe the station was owned by RKO then. And the movies on this or maybe on channel 11 were sponsored by Cal Worthington . To this day I remember "Here's Cal Worthington and his dog Spot!"

I am sure that Mr. Shatner has no regrets about anything he has done -- it has all been money in the bank for him!

I remember reading "Seven Days in May", probably in a Reader's Digest condensed book - my parents subscribed and I read them all. Never saw the movie.

I used to watch old movies on channel 9, and so maybe it was not channel 13. It did seem like Cal Worthington did sponsor a lot of late night movies.

Today I watched The Boy with Green Hair (1948) which I had recorded a few days ago on TCM. It had a 12 year old Dean Stockwell, plus Barbara Hale (pre Della Street) and other good actors. I'm glad I watched it, since I had not seen it before.

My favorite channel is TCM. I especially enjoy the 1030's films and their lavish sets, gowns and jewels. In the depression they certainly gave the film-goer their money's worth with that whole fantasy. Joan Crawford was wonderful back then. She was herself; a petite blonde without the huge caps on her teeth or the dyed dark hair. She was a great actress. Bette was great...over the top sometimes but I liked her outrageousness. Jean Harlow...There wasn't enough of her was there?

Jean Harlow died when she was 26 in 1937 (I assume you mean 1930s instead of 1030s), and so she did not live long enough to make as many movies as she would have otherwise. I think my favorite movie of hers is Dinner at Eight (1933), directed by George Cukor, who lived a long life and made many great movies.

The 1930s has been considered a golden age for Hollywood; for Mexican movies, the golden age was the 1950s, and for Italian, it would probably be the 1960s. The golden age for Germany was the 1920s, and Berlin was more important than Hollywood during this time, or at least had more studios and production companies.
