Hinoki cypress: winter damage? leaves turning black...
Comments (2)check the 7th link.. at the link ... its going to get dustier... lol ... pollen ken it was minus 20 for a month.. wind chill.. i am not impressed with your 20 degree temps... i would have been outside in a t shirt looking at my plants in 20 degrees .. but for the fact they were under 3 feet of snow.. BTW.. i have seen no damage on my hinoki.. those i can see of course.. your winter means nothing to these plants ... though transplant shock later in summer might be an issue.. but it has nothing to do with this.. IMHO .. Here is a link that might be useful: link...See Morechamaecyparis obtusa, fernspray gold false cypress turning brown
Comments (9)Yeah, some of the Chamaecyparis can get pretty ugly at the end of the year with the inner browning. I almost pulled my 'Fernspray Gold' from the yard the first year I had it. It was pretty ragged looking but my wife told me to keep it. I've had it 4 years now and It looks pretty cool for a golden, scragally, ferny thing. I actually like it a lot, just look somewhere else when it starts doing the inner browning thing. I also do what Mike does and knock off all the browning foliage to make it look presentable again. I guess mine looks pretty decent for growing in thick clay. Mike, I'll make my unqualified guess and say that your plant is either 'Filicoides' or 'Filicoides Compacta' if it is simply green and ferny. If it is ferny and gold then it is 'Fernspray Gold' and if it is ferny, gold, and has slightly more refined ferny foliage then I would say that it is 'Golden Fern', a sport found on 'Fernspray Gold' which I think was a sport found on 'Filicoides'. Tee hee. This post was edited by garen59 on Wed, Nov 12, 14 at 21:18...See Moredying Hinoki Cypress
Comments (3)When I was a little newer to gardening. I lost a beautiful Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'pendula' to what I thought was repeated invasions of red spider mites. The tree declined for several years before succumbing. I wasn't knowledgeable enough at the time to recognize the effect of the encircling root that slowly strangled the tree. The mites were only a symptom of the weakened tree. In good health and with the remedial actions I took, the tree should have been vigorous enough to resist their attack. Now that my story is out of the way, I'll come to the point of my post. I replanted in the same spot, making sure to slit the rootball vertically to eliminate (or at least greatly reduce) the possibility of an encircling root. That was about 10 years ago, & the tree thrives. I'm not suggesting that your tree has the same problem, only that in some instances, maybe most, it's fine to replant in the same spot. I would think the exception would be if you identify a soil-borne pathogen as the cause of the plant's demise. Al...See Moretoo much watering => Hinoki cypress turning brown?
Comments (3)you reference a third pic... there isnt one ... if you mean that one glob of brown ... i suspect someone moved the plant by just grabbing a handful of plant.. and dragging and lifting it ... things happen in tree time.. and thats too brown.. to have happened within the last few weeks... i suspect any time between digging.. transporting ... and installation .. i agree.. you need to take a hand trowel.. or tablespoon ... and dig a couple holes.. about 3 inches deep.. both in the ball planted.. and surrounding soil ... AND FIND OUT about soil moisture... in each.. and then water.. or not.. accordingly ... interior browning would be normal.. and increased by digging and shipping ... at least we know.. the hose is easily available.. lol ... ken...See MoreMaggie Fang
