Painted White vs. High Gloss Acrylic White Kitchen Cabinet Doors

I want to remodel my kitchen to replace with white kitchen cabinets. We do a lot of stir fry cooking and noticed my current kitchen cabinet doors feel sticky from all the cooking. I should have done a better job wiping the doors after cooking.

For the new kitchen, I want white cabinets but can't decide between painted white shaker style cabinets vs. modern looking high gloss acrylic (non-Thermofil, with MDF inside) finish cabinets. I'm thinking that the high gloss flat panel cabinets may be easier to wipe down than the painted white cabinets (which I'm concerned will turn yellowish over time and with sun exposure from sky light in the kitchen). The acrylic finish I'm look at said it has UV and scratch resistant coating . Need some help figuring out the pros and cons of each option.

First you need better venting for sure . I love my high gloss kitchen doors they do wipe off easily but I have a very good hood vent which runs before, during and after fo about 1/2 hr when I do Indian or stir fry cooking.

I am not an expert, but that doesn't stop me from having an opinion. (grin) I use an oil based primer when I am working on old exterior wood. And I use a slow dry oil based primer. But for something that will never be exposed to the elements and isn't old wood, I'm not so sure oil primer is going to make this paint project significantly better. I use Cabinet Coat for trim work. It is satin finish, though, not high gloss. You don't need to prime prime bare wood before applying Cabinet Coat - or maybe it is more correct to say that the first coat of CC is the primer. Someone else could probably answer this better than me, but I'm sure that spraying the lower gloss is another option. It's just not one of the options that was initially presented. Hopefully I'll know more when I receive the samples on Wednesday!

I always use a high gloss when painting cabinets or trimwork. It's more durable than the lesser gloss paints. Given the scrubbing that cabinets can get, as well as the wear and tear in opening and closing doors, etc., I go for durability over any consideration. I actually find high gloss to be both traditional or contemporary. In older homes you will see the woodwork done in a glossy oil based paint, which is similar to the high gloss sheen of a latex paint. I wouldn't do less gloss and then do a clear coat myself...so much work for basically the same look as a high gloss really. It is true that flat paint shows less blemishes than the higher glosses, but flat paint is never appropriate for a cabinet (IMO and many others).

Thanks for this suggestion, Jamie. Checked the site. Shipping is not free to Canada. But perhaps still a good deal, all things considered. I will check them out further. Can't wait to take possession of the condo.... might be a few weeks yet before I can start reno. I will post pics. :-)

I would recommend acrylic over shaker painted, you are correct on your assumptions, i have flat panel acrylic and it is easier to clean

Renovation of our kitchen going on ... Opted with acrylic high gloss cabinets and plywood boxes, Quartz countertops... I was advised to use acrylic flat doors on top cabinets and pvc on down cabinets as pvc can take better abuse ... google about it... and also don’t use wet cloths when wiping down the acrylic flat doors apparently not good for them.. according to google...
