Do you make your own birthday cake?
Comments (27)Cookie8, I almost always end up rewriting recipes, so I can make them in the order I need to. (Starting with preheat the oven to...) The way some recipes are written, reading ahead is necessary, although not always an option. I find it makes the instructions much longer, which makes the recipe look more intimidating. The truth is, if I can follow it easily to the letter, I find my results are more successful. Sometimes, I'll rewrite a recipe several times before it's where I need it to be. You didn't really ask, but I always get out every ingredient, bowl, spatula measuring cup/spoons and mixer that I'm going to need before I even start. I measure it all, and set everything on a tray, so all I have to do is mix everything together. (If a recipe has multiple parts, I set up different trays.) That way, when you read through the recipe, it's all set up and easy to ''check off'' while you're baking. I hope you try again. Determination is a fine quality to possess! I have an easy one bowl chocolate cake recipe, if you need something to go to, that's tasty, easy and worthy of a birthday cake. I usually make it with a Cinnamon Buttercream Icing, and get requests for it often. Just let me know if you'd like the recipe. Deanna, I always use the recipe on the back of a bar of Bakers Sweet German Chocolate. It's no secret, but rather more time consuming to make as a cake, than anything else. It's our favorite as the buttermilk always makes it so moist, and it's a cake that only gets better with time. We always make it the day before, so the flavors have time to meld. It's also fun to anticipate eating it, when it looks so good sitting under a glass cake cover....See MoreHow do you send your Birthday Blocks?
Comments (5)I'm glad you asked that question. This is my second time to have joined the Birthday Block Exchange. I've enjoyed it so much, both making and receiveing blocks from our friends here on the forum. I've always wondered if I should include extra fabric, a small gift, or anything at all. If the birthday girl doesen't ask for a specific block and it's my choice of what to make, I try to include the name of the block, a copy of the pattern or templetes and instructions. I also include a card. I've always wondered if that is enough. I also fear that the envelop will get ripped in the mail and enclose the block in a ziplock bag. I try to remember to put in my address, just incase, but don't always remember to do so. I'm usually the one with tape on the envelope. I tape it crossways and through the center. I do that because one one block I received was torn so badly that the block was barely hanging in it. It was saved because it was in a zip lock bag---Thank goodness!! I have received so many beautiful blocks and am so proud of them. Some of the girls include fabric to match, which was really nice, and I have received a book mark too. Jill, I'm so sorry the counter people are unkind. There's no excuse for that. I love the folks here In Sulphur Springs. They make if a plesant experience. After standing in line, it's always nice to receive a smile and a helpful hand at the counter. I just love going to my mail box and finding something from one of you here on the forum. doris...See MoreBirthday gift ideas
Comments (15)I gave myself a party for my 40th. The guests were given suggested comments, such as "My God, I thought you were 22!" Most of the gift were gags, and we had loads of fun. My friends gave me a surprise party for my 50th. My dad had just died that month, and I wasn't expecting any sort of celebration. But it was a great party. We all sang around the piano, and had a happy time. For my 60th, a friend threw me a jazz party with musicians, including a fabulous singer. Never had anyone sung "Happy Birthday" to me in quite that way! For my 70th last year, my kids gave me a surprise cocktail party at an old mansion. Somehow none of my friends leaked it, and once again I was completely surprised. They even brought in my BFF from Wisconsin. The evening was emotional and elegant, and I'll never forget it. I have so many wonderful memories of these events--for me, better than any "thing" I could have been given....See MoreDo you celebrate your birthday?
Comments (34)Yes, always. DD will cook me a lovely birthday dinner and back my favorite Wolferman's Rum Cream Pie instead of a cake. I will receive gifts, only 1 or two and fairly modest. I always cook DD's birthday dinner and I bake an angel food cake for DD and two local grandsons. There are also modest presents. DS lives too far to do this but I do send presents to him and his children. This year, he couldn't figure out what he wanted, so decided that I should take him and his children to tea (my treat) in London next week. That will be an expensive Bday present as a really lovely tea in London is quite expensive, but it will be a special treat for all of us. We've never been "go out to dinner" on Bday people - my mother cooked my dinner, I cooked my husband's and children's and fixed their favorites....See Moreyeonassky
