Comments (95)Tom: OK, maybe you will have to water. Some pointers that may help. Do you have some kind of SUV? I have a Suburban, so I am lucky. I have been watering about 400 new trees and some that I planted in prior years, If I use my methods and had just 100 or so--"piece of cake." I got a shallow rubber-like or flexible plastic tray that fits in the back. I can line up 40 jugs on this and can re-fill them right there and drain off the spillage out the back of the tray by pressing down its lip. I have another tray in the side that holds another 18. I drive close to me trees and carry them by twos or threes to the trees. For 90% of them I created a nice berm to hold the water, so I can pour it out fast. 100 trees, if they are in rows close toghether, maybe 2 or 2 1/2 hours. With kids helping, much less. No problem! Good luck. If you water them and keep up their strength, they will get established fast. If you see good buds form and the thick leader develop, you are home free, and one good watering now could do the trick. If the buds are really small and the leaders don't show any thickening, you should water more regurlarly until fall, if needed. --Spruce...See MorePopes Garden- FANTASTIC place
Comments (20)I did it I did it!!!! I went to Popes. Yay! Didnt find it at first so went to the Wawa on Rt 30 and the woman there told me exactly where to go. My boyfriend and youngest daughter went with me. Of course the baby loved the animals especially the turkey. I have NEVER seen a white turkey. They have a gorgeous selection of plants, I was very very impressed. Especially with that Angels Trumpet its HUGE (not for sale or 150.00)Oh and so many different varieties of houseplants. I love how everything is alphabetically marked its so cute. This late in the season (I guess) they didnt have too many varieities of Hostas (which is why I went. I think they had about 20 different ones, still a good amount. I bought 4, if boyfriend wasnt with me I would have gotten more. The giftshop is very nice. Their dogs (labs) are very cute and friendly hmmm, had a hard time tearing the baby away from them too. I was also impressed that they had Liquid Fence my mom is TRYING to grow Hostas this year and this is just what she needs and when Joan pulled out a info pack about what plants deer dont like I was blown away. I WILL DEFINATELY reccommend Popes to everyone interested in gardening!!!! I rate them an 11 on a scale of 1-10. Thanks for letting me know about Popes. Kymmie...See MoreSummer Blooming Azaleas
Comments (13)Thanks for the link Monique! I think these azaleas are seriously underused in New England. Most are hardy to Zone 4 and, being deciduous, they arent't bothered by the winter winds. The summer hybrids are certainly not the profuse bloomers of early spring like PJM. But, I grow them for the fragrance and you only need a few blooms to fill the garden with their wonderful aroma! As some of you know, we are planting new gardens here & I've been anxiously awaiting reaching the point where we were ready to add these wonderful plants. At our NH home, I think we had every Weston fragrant azalea & I'd be hard-pressed to pick a favorite...well, maybe, 'Golden Showers'? It's tough though because 'Pennsylvania', 'Parade', 'Sparkler', 'Weston's White Innocense', & 'Lemon Drop' are also delightful! It must be tough to get a license from Weston's to sell their hybrids. I can't think of another reason why they are so difficult to find. Demer's in Manchester used to sell one or two each summer but that was it. Darn shame...they're great plants. Idabean, yes...they are inclined to be more open in structure than evergreen azaleas. I rather like that about them. They give a loose, unstructured look in the garden (very woodsy, IMO) that's a nice contrast to the tight & full look of the evergreens. I've found that these Weston azaleas can handle considerable shade under tree canopies & still bloom very well. Of the three we purchased yesterday, two are in mostly sun locations but the third, 'Parade' is planted where it will only receive 2 hours of direct sun/day. After my experience with this plant in NH, I anticipate it doing very well. This particular one has been trained (by Weston's) into a short standard. We planted it nestled into a curve in a hedge of Japanese Hakone grasses that line our rear BBQ area. It's in bloom now & the fragrance is going to compete mightily with hubby's BBQ chicken wings! lol Tricia...See MoreOur trip across the pond
Comments (23)Rosewitch, England was definitely one of my favorite places I have ever visited. My folks took me there when I was 14, and I remember bits and pieces the Crown jewels, walking amongst the Stonehenge stones (roped off now, vandalism), Stratford upon Avon. Time for me to take my own 14YO. Im trying to think how I can get over there for a whole summer, LOL. Dlynn, I could have worked so much more. I didnt really look at night time stuff and there was loads to do. Greece: cant help you, but shoot Yasou a line, she went a few years ago. LOL Annie! Teresa, well go together. I wanted to explore more cooking and food shops/stores but didnt get to. Terri, here is more a link to Pictures of England, a website pointed out to me by Denise. I started it on Bourton on the Water, where we stayed for a few days. Thanks Sharon, I was actually thinking how can I even come close to posting her quality of travel guides, I dont do the pictures she does LOL. We might have sat at the same table in the Cheshire Cheeses dining room! Sawdust still there, but we didnt make it to the cellar. I missed a lot of the British Museum. It has changed.check out the new atrium. I couldnt keep up with DH and DS16. Afternoons, when I planned museums, I crashed. Next time! Pam, lots of people did more than we did per day! Theater every night, more attractions, I cant imagine. Gina heh heh yeah I need another vacation like a hole in my head. Speaking of whichDH has another week off in August. Nooooooooo! Kathleen, DH says he took an average of 200 pictures a day. Yup. Me, I just buy the post cards or Google the images, same thing (DARFC from the photo bugs here) Cathy, thanks for giving me the War and Peace moniker heh heh. Next time I go with CF friends! LindaC, I know. Im still exhausted. Speaking of the V&A, did you know there was a Dale Chihuly chandelier in the entrance room?...See Moredbarron
