I have a few in containers on my patio and then lots in the ground. All the cocontainer roses are doing great so far you can definitely grow them in containers.

Where do you live? Will they overwinter? I say go for it! I have a lot of container plants which self-water here with all our rain. My roses don't do as well, but usually I consider their pots temporary. They need more care and fertilizer, but it will be worth, especially if you move. What an eclectic collection of pots, btw. I really like those on the stairs! : )) P.S. You are lucky to have your house paid off!

We're in Indiana, zone 6b. The other containers I had before (in the same zone but different state) generally did OK, but we likely will move some of them into our garden shed and others will wrap in bubble wrap and put either leaves or mulch around them. I'm really more concerned about the Japanese Maple. In ordering from JP I paid attention to their hardiness zone and some of the fuller ones we bought locally, so I've got to believe they will be hardy here. The only one I'm not sure about is th Fourth of July climber.

Most of the pots we had to buy this year, and thank goodness for Home Depot and Lowes. I figure the more variety the more visual interest. The ones on the stairs we brought with us from our previous place. My favorite are the Keter beds in the front with the marigolds (we actually have two...the other has geraniums and my climbing rose). We found them at Menards. i wanted something that had some height to them because the front of our house is about four or five feet off the ground. I call it my hillbilly hi-rise. Paid for IS nice, but there are too many trade-offs for living in this type of housing. When our local Parade of Homes takes place, I will be in full "let's get the heck out of here" overload, but until I win the lottery...... :)

I grow a lot of roses in containers because I live in a townhouse, so don't have much space to plant at the moment (and also hope to take things with me when I move to a place with a bigger yard, so you and I have that in common). I find that my roses like at least 10 gallon containers -- they'd probably prefer 15. This spring I put some osmocote in the pots and added some mulch to keep them from drying out too fast. I'll give them some Alaska Fish Fertilizer once or twice per month during the summer (more or less depending on how they do). You are right to worry about the Japanese Maple. My folks back in the midwest lost theirs to the polar vortex this year (mature trees, like 30 years old -- heartbreaking).

What cultivar is the Japanese Maple?

It's a Beni Otake. I purchased it locally, so I'm hoping it will be hardy as well. The tag from the garden center shows it hardy from zones 5 to 8.

The half whisky barrel containers are a little over 11 gallons while the two white ones are over 30 gallons. The center one is the back row is about 11 or 12. I've also used the Alaska Fish Fertilizer once so far. I've bought some organic rose fertilizer, which I probably should have used before planting them. Would it be too late to scratch some in now?

Robw, I live in a condo complex and have eight roses in containers now (six or so more in the ground). I’m in SoCal so winter is not an issue. But we do have 100+ temps and very dry conditions in summer. I use drip watering and keep all the mature roses in plastic half-barrels. They seem happy there. This year I’m giving fish emulsion once a month and using coffee grounds and redwood bark for mulch. FWIW ...your pots look fantastic! I love the variety.

I have about 10 to 12 roses in pots. I have a small garden with a large patio. Also have jasmine, gardenia, rangoon creeper etc in pots. Most are large, 15 to 35 gallon. Planning on putting in drip irrigation for the time I will be away in summer, but apart from that, they do fine..

I have 1 rose in a 10 gallon pot since I can't fit any more shrubs in my garden, it's doing pretty well in the California warmth but it'll be nice to move it out of the summer heat

Great job with your containers - everything looks so nicely organized, & I love the pops of color! I also have a lot of containers - the most important things are that your pots drain well & you keep up with the watering, especially in drying weather conditions such as a bright, windy day. (It doesn't freeze where I live, so I can't offer any advice re over-wintering.) Re the rose fertilizer you mentioned, I would be hesitant to put it on such young plants in containers, for fear of burning the roots. But, the fish fertilizer should work great!

Rob, if you have HomeSense (I think that's the name), Rose's, Ollie's, Bargain Hunt and sometimes even Big Lots, take a look there for pots. The prices are often unbelievable for large ceramic or resin pots.

Cyndita, I kind of wondered about the fertilizer. I bought Bumper Crop rose food from a local garden center and used it when I potted a Scentimental rose. However, I put it at the bottom of the container so it isn't in direct contact with the roots. I had planned to stick with fish emulsion for the first year and then expand next year. Thanks for all your insight. I have a feeling our water bill is going to jump this year, although right now we're doing well with the rain.

vaporvact, I did indeed go to Big Lots and found the blue container on the red stand in the second picture. The thing I got there that I like better are the two puppies statue in the rose bed. We had a basset named Droopy that we had to put down last Labor Day weekend, and so the rose bed is a tribute to her and the other dogs we've owned.

What a sweetheart and such a beautiful tribute. My little kittens are buried away from the roses, but nearby. They loved to hide amongst the thorns of New Dawn. I used to search for them and always wondered where they were until the day I found their fur hanging from the thicket! They were watching me all the time!

I have my roses that are on fortuniana rootstock in the ground, but I have several own roots and a couple of roses that are on Dr. Huey..... those are in the pots, because of nematodes.

The garden is a wonderful place to pay tribute to your Droopy, and your other dogs. As a fellow dog lover, I know the special place a beloved dog can hold in your heart.

I have some roses in containers in my front yard becaue my HOA wont allow me to plant roses in my own beds. So I am obeying the letter of the law.

I also have some in pots in back yard because I am afraid of rose replant disease and crown gall. Also back yard patio has roses in containers too because I want to be surrounded by roses.

I have yet to have a lot of success with any of my container roses. I have been experimenting with a grittier mix. Perhaps I need to fertilize more often.

I also lost a few roses over the winter when I did not adequately winter protect (I bury the pots) e.g. Blossomtime, Koko Loko, Bekinda's Dream.
