I have several of these in 6-inch terra cotta pots. It gets too cold and wet here for this species, so they have to come inside for the winter.

Most Dyckia grow much larger than this species. Some Dyckia can survive light frost. Some like part-sun, others full sun, so pick carefully if you want to put them in the ground. I know lots of folks in So. California use them as landscape plants. Be careful with the larger Dyckia. They are reputed to be much more vicious and aggressive than Agaves. ;)

Thank you for sharing this! Now I know what my baby will grow up to be! :) I have this one, but at the moment it's only about 4"! LOL! I have it in a mixed container right now.

We are pretty mild here as far as winter, but do get some frost and a hard freeze or two.

I'm thinking I may be better off keeping it in a container.
That would help keep it clean with being able to water and keep gravel under it.

I will try and post some pics tomorrow.

I grow my plants in Mediterranean International Zone 21 or Calif.10 We don't put them in the ground, we do grow them in a pot, and they do much better in a green house. Growers here in Calif. greenhouse them. I don't know what low temps. they will tolerate. Bromos. I think may be tropical. There is one Dykia that will take low, high temps and dry, a perfect plant if it doesn't bite you.

I have two varieties growing here. One is small and dark green with a orange flowers on a stalk. They grow outdoors under a tree in the shade. They have survived two winters. I thinkwe have a frost to the mid 20's here and there. One ICe storm but our winters have been mostly dry ones. The other species is a thinner longer leaf and lighter in color. I just got them in trade so they have not grown a whole bunch as of yet. Both came with not much to ID them. One day I might post them and be more militant about finding out heir proper names. I grow them like hardy aloes.

I have 'Dark Star' which is a hybrid or selection. They've grown rather fast, and have several dozen pups each. We had a frosty night last January, but I saw no apparent damage. I'm in Sunset 23.

hoovb~ Very nice! Love the color of those! Here where I am we have an occasional hard freeze. I really am not to confident I have a good place in the yard that won't water log.

I'm looking into the possibility of raised beds next season.

My Dykia lived through 24 last year and 20 the year before. Research your species. they do differ, Yuccado in Texas sells cold hardy dykias for Zone 8, SMgrowers rates Cherry coke dykia to 20-25 degrees.

I don't have alot of info on the Dykia Marnier at the moment.

for now I treat mine like an aloe. It gets full AM sun and filtered the rest of the day.

I water once a week.

I love the feel of this one. It's kinda velvety/silky.

Recommended temp zones 10-12

Leaf ends shrivel with an excess of heat. (mine did do that this summer, so I gave a little extra water)

I got mine on ebay. I do not know of any other sources . Maybe someone will come along and help.

I just realized last night that this should be kept more dry than the other plants in this pot for the winter.

Would it be O.K. just to leave it in and be very carful when I water to keep it away from the Dyckia? The pot will probably be moved to a greenhouse.

We are usually pretty mild here in the winter.

In a word, no - I likea the Dyckia, too, and found it to be very easy to grow in San Deigo.

Given that it's from Brazil, it probably won't like the mild winters of Arizona - keep it very dry.
