Modern Exterior Colors for '80s House/Stain Concrete Brick
Hi--
We're planning to stain the cedar siding, trim, and possibly the concrete brick of our 1983 Cleveland area home. We'd like the house to look more modern and still blend into the wooded area. We're thinking of semi-transparent ochre (think German mustard) stain for the brick, dark army green for the siding, and a dark brown or bronze for the trim. The front door is mostly glass, but the door trim could be a fourth color. Sound OK? Should we keep everything dark and in the same color family? Other color suggestions? Should we put a sealer on the brick?
We don't want any white or light colors. The roof is brand new, so it'll be staying. Also, do we need to replace the (perfectly functional) garage door? I know a modern glass or wood door would be great, but is the current door OK?
Feel free to give landscaping advice, too! (We have lots of deer.)

Comments (15)I would use SW Spalding Gray or a lighter color down. It depends on your neighborhood. My neighborhood has very similar home styles of the same year and is lately going lighter. In the last few months some have even gone an off white. They all look very fresh and clean. Anyway, this chit should work whether you choose one of the lighter shades or darker. Chit samples below do not really look like the color "on" but here it is. They change greatly according to the time of day and go from a warm taupe to taupe beige-y to a warm mottled vintage gray. The Heron Plume is much much lighter in real life and would be a great trim color. This color for the door. Don't be afraid to go a bit brighter than you normally would as that area is in shadow. Someone said your roof clashes with the brick, but on my monitor (and what I've seen in real life of what I suspect is your brick color), I think the roof color is great! It also picks up the exterior light fixtures and your lamp post colors. There's no reason that charcoal and beige can't look great together, and are often used. Comments (6)Thanks for the feedback. We are planning to use LP smartside (possibly vertical panels for the sides and back and horizontal in front). Owens Corning Duration on the roof. I have a couple photos handy - one close up of the brick and the other a winter shot. Comments (4)For the trim color I like the lighter one better. Seems to work with the brick more. Personally I don't think the green works with your house, but that's just me. I would probably look more towards a taupe on the siding. Regardless, once you've removed the shutters don't reinstall them. They are much too narrow to work with the windows. I would also paint the garage door the same color as the siding. I would not paint the brick. You take a no maintenance product and turn it into a long term maintenance issue. Plus with the right siding and trim color the brick will look fine. PRO5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoYou have a home that has some Country French details, so I'm not sure modern is in the cards. IMO your brown is way too dark and hides the lovely details of your home. Look at some home similar in styling to yours for inspiration

I would consider a garage door in this carriage stone and would also consider German Mortar Smear on your bricks to update the appearance and the value of your home.
5 years agoThe house from the front is mostly roof. It looks gray. So you have mostly gray and you want gold and green. I did a poor job but is this close to the look you want?
I think it would look better all gold or all green.

I think you're trying to use too many different colors on this house and losing some cohesiveness. How about just doing the siding and trim in close but different shades of green?
