Garbage disposal drain requirement
Comments (1)If you use the correct "Center Waste Kit" you will have plenty of room. You need to get a "Disposal type Center Waste Kit" In a Disposal type center waste kit you will get the "center baffled tee" and one cross tube that has a 90deg bend on the end to connect to the sink tailpiece opposite of the disposal. The second cross tube does not have a bend on the end. It is a straight tube that has a flat flange on the end of the tube. The plastic elbow that comes supplied with the disposal is discarded. You then put the rubber gasket in the disposal port, then hold the flat flange on the cross tube against the rubber gasket and slide the metal bracket on the tube and bolt it to the disposal body as indicated in your disposal instructions. That will leave you a discharge line from the disposal that is horizontal at the disposals discharge port height. The discharge line from the center baffled tee will then fit into your trap without lowering the trap. You can find the "Disposal Type center waste kits" at any hardware or home supply store where they sell the drain parts. They will be approximately the same price as the standard double sink center waste kits (about $12)...See MoreSilgranite Performa Medium 1 3/4 and garbage disposal issue-help!
Comments (8)Hi Kathy, I remember responding to one of your previous posts regarding the Performa sink. I have the 1-3/4 sink with an Insinkerator Evolution Essential Pro installed under the smaller bowl. This model is not the compact version. It is crowded under my sink but I also have a trash pullout there too. The plumber who did the work did not have any issues getting it to fit. I was there the day of the install and he didn't complain about anything. The garbage disposal works fine. The sinks drain fine and the dishwasher gets the dishes clean as a whistle. My sink is located in an island but regardless the drain has to be the right height in the cabinet just as it would have to be if it exited out the back of a cabinet and into wall. From the middle of the disposal opening to the cabinet floor is 12 inches by my quick measuring. From the middle of the exit drain to the cabinet floor is approx. 10 inches. So while it doesn't look lower in the pictures it is. The exit drain could be lowered but since you cabinet and counter tops are already in place I am sure it would be problematic. I know that we had to open wall and lower exit drains in a bathroom remodel. Here are a couple pictures. Hope you can tell how the two sink drains are connected. You can email me if you would like me to send some additional photos. Hope you can get it too work out. The only thing that a plumber friend of ours commented on about the installation was that the drains on the two sinks should have been metal not plastic. He said that the plastic ones tend to develop leaks after a few years. I am not going to lose sleep worrying about a possible future leak....See MoreHELP: Sink with garbage disposal is clogged & dishwasher leaks
Comments (6)Thanks, everyone. I definitely should have known better than to put that food in the garbage disposal. I learned an expensive lesson. Although I didn't put all those food items in at one time, it was still a mistake to put them in there. The disposal is over 14 years old. As for the dishwasher, it was leaking while in use a year prior to the recent sink clog, so the clog has nothing to do with the leak in the dishwasher. The dishwasher doesn't leak while not in use. I'd be happy to wash the dishes by hand if it wasn't for the pain/injury in my foot. Things are old in this house, and they're breaking down. The kitchen faucet has had issues and has been leaking since 2007 (it's old), yet the landlord refused to have it fixed when a plumber was here for a kitchen pipe. I had even obtained a replacement faucet & replacement parts to help out, but he still refused to agree to make repairs. When I moved in, I was told that the kitchen would be remodeled, so everything would be fixed; that never happened. I can't wait to move out. If I was a regular tenant--not related to this family member--I'm sure things would have been fixed....See MoreGarbage Disposals - Any Recommendations
Comments (17)OneRidgeOff - Well for me, it's either garbage disposal or throwing it out in the trash since I have no place to compost nor would I have anything to do with the compost - might as well recommend my getting an outhouse for my balcony :-) ETA - I know you weren't recommending that I have a compost heap but merely letting the poster know that composting was not an option :-) I feel lucky to have carved out just enough space for a trash roll out below the sink when I finish my remodel. I have a trash can now in my current galley (or did before my demo started this week - Hurray!!! but that was horrendously inconvenient because the only place for it was in front of my only cabinet with drawers so I had to move it every time I needed something from the drawers. :-( Paper/plastic and other recyclables I carry down to the lobby level where there is a recycling dumpster. Thanks for the recommendations to all. I have read that Waste King makes a good disposal but I have had Insinkerators for as long as I could install (they were prohibited in New York City until fairly recently) and they performed extremely well and lasted so why potentially hex myself by changing :-)...See MoreUser
