With regards to Yugoslavia, German occupying forces withdrew from Serbia in 1944 and from the northern states in 1945. Red army presence in Yugoslavia (contrary to other central and eastern european states) was limited and ended with the end of the war. It seems to me that a large percentage of the German people (in Germany) was supporting Hitler before and during most of the war, regardless if many might not have been aware of the total magnitude of the particular atrocities. The German people were mostly behind the party in their dream of turning the whole of Europe to German hinterland. The war couldn't have happened the way it happened otherwise. Nationalism was a pretty nasty thing and still is.... In my country, apart from the Jewish 'cleaning up', the rest of the atrocities (mass executions of all males in villages including boys, burning down all the villages in whole areas etc etc) happened by the Wehrmacht (the regular army) btw. Attributing all blame to a small minority of maniacs who were the leaders doesn't help anyone in my view and certainly does not help humankind learn from its mistakes. Even in Germany there has been a recognition of it. There are dangerous signs that this recognition is waning lately, although many Germans themselves at the very same time seem very ready to brand whole nations based on their leaders mistakes. Food for thought. No nation, or country or state should ever be let to think that it is better, in any way, than another. This is what I have gotten from all of this. Now everybody, all this has been very interesting but pls. let's return to roses, German or otherwise. No quippy comebacks when looking for things, but I sure hated for mom to send me looking. She'd have 27 instructions, all of which I was to remember....."Up the stairs, to the dresser, on the left side of the bed, in the third drawer on the right, under my pink slip on the left next to the blue one, near the back but not all the way............." Whew!!! I hated for her to send me looking for ANYTHING! And it was never there. UGH! Mom's favorite whenever we sassed her..... You'll be dead before God can get the news! A review of the cherry tomatoes that I grew this year: Rose Quartz (not the multiflora) tastes sweet and good and looks very pretty. It was not given the best spot in my garden, so it wouldn't be fair to comment on its productivity. Maglia Rosa, an elongated striped cherry was excellent at all stages of ripeness (at least when showing ANY pink). It is a compact plant with wispy leaves which was fairly early to ripen and is still pumping them out. I really like it. Blush a bigger elongated yellow cherry was excellent when fully ripe and bigger than Maglia Rosa. It is also an indeterminate. I liked it a lot. Rosella (a purple) was productive, sweet and tasty. I think it tastes even better than my previous favourite which was: Carbon Copy, a dark cherry which is prolific, and is said to taste like a mini-Carbon. I loved it two years ago, but I wasn't so crazy about it this year. Sara's Galapagos is a red currant with decent flavour, but is fiddly to pick due to it's tiny size. Violette Kirsche is another purple cherry which is bigger than Rosella, but not as tasty. Ambrosia Rose is fabulous! Mine started out a dull orange, but as they ripened they turned to an orangey red. Lee (the breeder from J&L Gardens) has worked hard to capture that Sungold flavour, and I think he has done it, or at least come very close with this little gem with a WOW flavour! Linda

I agree with Nik's experience very much, and whilst Bierkreek have been helpful and in English, I also don't like their website too much. As for 'My Roses', I am wondering if there is something wrong with me, as when I check on their site, I cannot see any roses listed, just a lot of information in German. To find which roses they have, I had to look on HMF and see they have 500 or so, but I cannot see any of this on their website, which would disappoint me. Maybe I am missing something. I think, over here, we are blessed with so many suppliers, Beales and Austin's have such a large inventory to satisfy most people, so only the collector or the curious would want to bother with ordering roses from the Continent. However, there is one that I have not tried so far, but really want to give them some of my business, because they have an excellent website, everything is clear and precise, their FAQ section tells me all I need to know, payment is simple by Paypal or Card... and their delivery charge is very small and covers the entire order for container roses. They also have a good selection of roses that I cannot get here, from all the major breeders, like Guillot, Kordes, Tantau.. etc.. They are actually a Swiss nursery that sends out from near Bremen in Germany, called Lubera.. they also supply via Amazon. A quote from their FAQ: ''You are a Swiss nursery - where do the English texts come from on your homepage? As mentioned, we write and speak English. But honestly not as good as the texts that are posted on our website. We work with a professional translator who specialises in horticulture and helps us with our English''.
