how should I rearrange this family room? very small!!!

Willing to buy a new couch possibly. Would like to keep it though (we’re getting new legs for it). How should I position the TV in this room? I’ll be doing some floating shelves next to the fireplace so that is off limits. Should I get rid of the media stand and just put the tv on top of the fire place? The issue with that is that you have to look up at the tv. Idk. I don’t want it to be the centerpiece of this room.

Any ideas?!

This should work for your room Start to use the fireplace and place the TV across from the fireplace.

Joanieponie here is a picture of the barn doors and track. They are mounted on the family room side. Someone suggested I could mount art to the doors and I think that's a very interesting idea that could look really great! Seems like everyone feels it makes most sense to keep the current entry and add a second one to the hallway. I'm on board with that and think it's the best option too. I sure am glad I received so many opinions because I was so tempted to close up the wall entirely and I probably would have been kicking myself later. I better call the GC first thing in the morning to let him know he doesn't need to bring drywall - just his hammer to bust out a second opening. He'll be thrilled since he thought I was off my rocker wanting to already Reno our new house he just built! Thanks everyone!

Your cat may want a break from attention from the baby. You might consider a high perch with a means to get to it that can become your cat's nap space. Are you DIY inclined? Something similar to this https://www.coolcattreeplans.com/tall-cat-tree-for-large-cats/ could be turned so the access hole to the bottom box (litterbox) is in the corner requiring the cat to climb over it to reach it -- out of reach of crawling child if bottom shelving is built to block access from the front -- and higher wider shelves could hold a water dish and food dish with the top a bed. You'd want to build it light enough to be able to move it to clean the litter box and with a large enough and sturdy enough base to not turn over and/or attached to the wall so a baby or toddler couldn't pull it over. An actual corner cabinet with holes for climbing through could work. Just adding shelving in a corner with niches or holes in them to enable the cat to climb from bottom to top could work. Obviously you don't use your fireplace so you could center your tv in front of the fireplace like you have it now...fireplace will be a frame around it of sorts. Or put your tv on the wall behind your couch, turning your couch to the side......end to fireplace other end directed to tv. Or tv in front of window.

A condo size sofa would allow turning sofa to window. Put TV on window wall. Need room measurements to determine if this would work. Here is rough mock up.

I will measure and see what the exact dimensions are. As far as placing any kind of furniture in front of the window, no can do. There’s a floor vent :( the fireplace is also out of commission and totally bricked in so it’s just there for design purpose.

Right now there is no room for a coffee table or to have a conversation. The solution with a narrow room like this is to align the deeper furniture with the deeper part of the room. Put the TV on the wall over a shallow console, on the wall opposite the fireplace. Then put the couch in front of the fireplace, facing the TV. You'll still have a "hallway" in the same place, but now you have room for an arm chair in front of the windows, maybe an end table in the corner between arm chair and couch, maybe even a second (slipper?) chair on the near end, but who can say since we can't see the other direction. I suspect you could fit a coffee table in front of the couch as well.

Fireplaces can be nice design elements, but here it is enslaving you to bad options. If you ignore it, you can arrange the furniture to actually enlarge the space and welcome friends to join you there.

Can the TV be put on a stand (or wall mounted) to the right of the window? Then sofa across from windows and maybe a small footprint swivel chair where the sofa is now (or even 2 dining style chairs so they are small but would work for extra seating). And then a great piece of art on and/or above the fireplace.

If the fireplace is out of commission, demolish the thing. It is dictating everything about this room and it doesn't even work. Then put the TV there on a console, with sofa facing the window and two chairs facing the sofa with a coffee table in between.

I sympathize cause my townhouse had pathway in front of the tv. But still seems worth a try. Btw, the stained glass seems such a feature...? maybe you'd like small items near them placed in a grouping somewhere.
