Lamb Hass and other trees - how close can I plant it to a house?
Comments (3)ok, i finally took a picture and uploaded it here: http://photos.gardenweb.com/garden/galleries/2010/09/can_i_plant_an_avocado_tree_he.html this is where i want to plant the Lamb Hass, in the far right corner of this terraced section behind my house. I would remove the dwarf lime tree that is there and plant the Lamb Hass so it would be 12 feet from the house but only 2 1/2-3 feet from the walls of the terrace. the back wall is very sturdy, the other two are less sturdy. Is this ok to plant here? If not, what about a semi-dwarf citrus or asian guava? thanks, ari ps: is there an easier way of adding an image? i find i have to post it elsewhere than link to it, which is very clunky considering the internet today. Here is a link that might be useful: picture of planting area...See Morepink banana squash
Comments (36)this is my second try at growing guatamalan blue squash and i couldn't be happier ! on my first try i had to harvest one squash in early august because it was dying from all the bugs. about 10" long and delicious !! for some reason we have no squash bugs this year, and insect barrier over the 2 plants until late july seemed to keep away SVB's. the biggest of 5 squash is getting corky at the stem, but it's only about 20" long. will it keep growing ? the smallest stopped growing at 8" so i just picked it. also nipped of the vine tips last week. don't want to seem greedy, but is there anything else i can do at this point to help my 4 prize squash along ? is it too late for more fertilizer ? thanks for any more info....pat...See MoreLamb's Quarters: My new favorite vegetable (or weed)
Comments (23)Robin, I only use the leaves of the purslane, and I also use young tender leaves of lambsquarter. Like you, I don't care for dandelion greens, although Grandma used to wilt them with hot bacon grease and serve them. She said they had to be young and tender or they'd be bitter. I think they're bitter anyway, although I did make dandelion blossom wine a couple of times when I was younger. It was intensely sweet, I remember, and my brother drank a couple of quarts and got sick. Serves him right, the glutton. I've eaten May Apples, though I was very strictly forbidden to eat the seeds or rind, being told those parts are poisonous. I don't know if it's true, but I don't think Grandpa would say that for no reason. The fruit is sweet and not unpleasant, but custardy and odd. My favorite were the little bright red wintergreen berries, tasting like Pepto-bismol, there weren't enough to do anything except snack. I make jelly from foraged elderberries and pick blackberries in the national forest, but those are easy and readily available and identifiable. I do hunt morels but not very hard because I don't like them, LOL. We have tons of black walnuts here but no one wants them, they're messy and a PIA to crack. Now you've got me wishing that old crab apple tree was still here, the state widened the road and the tree was gone. Annie...See MoreA Wegmans Safari (pic heavy)
Comments (31)My only complaint about my local Wegmans is that the price of the salad bar--also has just a few hot items--is $7.49 per pound. When I shop in Maine on the coast I have found their supermarkets with very nice salad bars are much less expensive. As I recall when I went there in late September, the price was less than $6 a pound. I can eat really well in Maine between their lobster pounds and salad bars. Nancy...See More- 7 years ago
