Building a Home Design Dilemma Kitchens

Wolf or Waypoint cabinets?

I'm trying to pick cabinets for a new kitchen. We had Aristocraft at our last home and loved the quality, and Wolf is essentially the same cabinet but with less options. This leaves me with picking something that is darker than I wanted. Another kitchen center priced out Waypoint as a similar cost cabinet, and I like those doors and stains better. I just don't know how they compare in quality. Can anyone elaborate on the quality between these cabinets?

Neither. Move up to a real mid grade line. If someone priced Wolf the same as Waypoint, they are overcharging you. And Waypoint is overpriced for what it is.

Which level of Wolf were you looking at? They have multiple levels and each is different - sort of a good better best situation.

I also agree about the Waypoint cabinets... they are made by American Woodmark ( sold at Depot ) - you would get a better price there...

DO you have other options??

We just had them installed, on the advise of our contractor, who said we would be very pleased with these semi-custom, budget friendly, made in America cabinets. We are so disappointed. These cabinets are poorly made and poorly painted using low end wood. The shelves are light weight and low end. Please look at the pictures of my "new and improved" kitchen (not!).

Legacy is a lower end line...Presidential series is their super beefed up construction option, if I remember correctly. I used to sell Legacy years ago. The contractor works for you...is it in his contract that HE supplies the cabinets?? On one hand, I can understand why some contractors pick certain dealers to work with. They work well with them, trust them to get the order right....etc. Delays can cost a contractor a lot of $$$$. On the other hand, contractors need to find a good, better and best cabinet line options or they are limiting their clients on cabinet choices. You should tell him that at a minimum you want a semi-custom line. Semi-custom lines have better finishes. Legacy is a lower end line with several box construction options (ie Presidential). I wouldn't use that line...unless you are on a budget. But my guess is, presidential and semi-custom wouldn't be that far apart in price. My only other advice is on the espresso finish. It became popular about 10-15 years ago when Starbucks stores remodeled with all espresso finishes....to complement their 'coffee theme'. That style is now hugely dated. Consider another stain. If you want something more timeless, go with a medium brown....not too red or yellow. I've not seen the Legacy charcoal but assuming its a dark gray? or almost black? The gray trend is also starting to slide. But if you love it....go for it. It's your house.

A 5 year warranty? Are you flipping the house? There’s no way that those should be in the same comparison as cabinets that offer a lifetime warranty and many many more options. If they are being priced similarly, someone is gouging you significantly. If you are being quoted Merillat Masterpiece at the same price as Waypoint, again there is no comparison. Masterpiece is far superior. Merillat Classic would be nearer the mark to Waypoint, and is usually better priced.

Wolf Classic. I know this place deals with Bishop and Aristocraft as well, but he thinks it'll run it up $3k more if we go that way, and we don't have a lot of room in the budget to upgrade because we want to upgrade a LOT of other things with this new construction home. Wolf Classic came in at about $9-10k and the Waypoint about 8.5k. These are two designers though, and they each priced out similar but slightly different options so it is hard to compare. I don't know which line they priced me for Waypoint, it isn't clear on the estimate.

I should add that the Waypoint person has typos all over their estimate and I know they did it in a rush. So I feel like theirs might be inaccurate on the cost.

We have Aristocraft cabinets.

The only reason we used them because of the low price point. IKEA low. They're really inexpensive. Talk to a distributor to get different prices...

Wolf Classic should be about 10-15% BELOW Waypoint. Talk to a different dealer. Either the Wolf person is getting an outrageous markup, or the Waypoint person has left off about a quarter of what is needed. Moldings, panels, fillers, and other accessories will be about 1/4 to 1/3 of any budget cabinet order if it is actually being detailed correctly with a compound crown, light rail, scribe, shoe mold, +++. It’s like a change order with a builder. It’s the needed and overlooked by the consumer accessories where the money is made.
