Lynda, I think 49" is just too tall. If it's a giclee, see if it can be printed in a smaller size. I see now that I misjudged in my previous renderings of the 46" squares, and that those would even be a bit too large. Whatever size this would be...

Yes, 49 is too high, but the width of 49 is fine. You can go smaller. You do have some flexibiltiy. For example, you can go taller than the bookshelves or try to line the top up with the bookshelves. For the width, if you want something smaller and like having other items with the art, a piece that is on the smaller side is okay. I'd like to see a larger piece there, though, for the impact.

Can you show us the piece you liked and a link to it?

Lots of discussion about the art...and in consideration of your color aesthetic...I think this room needs some drama and detail on an equal level to your rug....as is the space feels bland...which really undersells the elegance of the room...the rug statement suggests you have the eye for a little more drama..I would push that a little harder...one important element of design has been ignored here is contrast...

Ok, so, I found art I really love - it’s a sunset, and I’m always taking pics of sunsets at the beach. And, I like that it has the pinks, greens, and teal/blue.
I can do framed at 50 x 40 - see the blue tape. Seems like that would work, right?
Or I can just do the canvas with no frame, which would be 48 x 36 or 56 x 42”.

1. Does this artwork work? If so:
2. should I do the framed 50 x 40 or just the canvas?

Can you help us with with what you would do? We are all trying to learn here. I do happen to agree with you but I don’t know what I would do differently.

That picture didn’t turn out good above as I was taking a picture of my screen - this shows the canvas print a bit better.

I'd choose the canvas, 48 x 36.

Thanks CDR. I was leaning with a frame and mat, lol. What was your decision based on? (trying to learn from the pros) :-). Do you think the "art" has the right saturation? Thanks.

A lot of this is personal choice. I would have chosen something with more pink in it. As I mentioned, size also depends on whether you want something else on the mantle with the art.

I don't know what kind of glass is used, but likely it will have a lot of reflection in that spot (with glass). Also, you lose some of the impact, because the mat takes up some space.

I'd try taping out both, so you can see which one you like better. The one you have taped up there recently is too close to the mantle. I'd raise the others a little.

The shelves are going to be very important here also. The art and shelves really need to be decided together. Do you want the art to blend in with the shelves? One venue? Or will the art be the statement and the shelves stand in the background? Either way, they need to be simplified drastically.

Thank you! I think I'd prefer nothing else on the mantle (only because I can't imagine what I would put on it). And, I'd like the bookcases to stand in the background I think? Once I get the art, I was going to work on the shelves - which will probably be a nightmare for me.

Then, I'd definitely consider the larger canvas. With the 42" high art, you'd have 14 inches of height without the art. How much space is there between the taped art and the top of the mantle?

Have you considered doors on the upper cabinets?

The latest taped art above has only 2" from the top of the mantle.

I really don't want to spend any more $$ on the bookcases. What I have into them now was way over budget and behind schedule. In hindsight, I may have forego the bookcases. But, I do like them open - maybe just not with the items that are on it?

I'd put the art 5" above the mantle for your test.

I'd like the larger one, if nothing else on the mantle. You really need to overwhelm those bookcases.

OK - I will tape that out. If I did go with the smaller canvas and put other items on the mantle, would the candle sticks work? Or something bigger?

I prefer the larger size. You don’t need more clutter.

Make sure each sitter has a conveniently reachable place to set something down. Use a combination of table and floor lamps to create flattering lighting. Overhead lighting casts shadows on the face, and is less flattering. Beware of overcushioning.

Yep. I like the larger one. Keep in mind, for the floating frame, some websites produce are larger product in the floating frame version. So, floating frame version will be slightly larger than canvas version. What is the size of the floating frame version?

OK. So, the bigger canvas I cannot get in the floating frame - I would have to do it on my own when I purchase. I can get the smaller 48 x 36 in a floating frame, which would make it 49.5 x 37.5. Hmmm.

So, should I just stick with the bigger picture with no frame? Or go with smaller with the frame, which would add 1 1/2 to width and height?

I'd stick with the larger.

Your room is lovely. I noticed that you have an awesome view from the nook. I think your living room painting should mimic that view. You could frame the art so it appears you are looking out a window. I also like the idea of a TV in the space. When you are not watching it you can have it set to a living view, maybe the ocean, sky, or garden. I find I get tired of one dimensional art, this way the options are endless.

I liked the view of the pic sitting on the mantle and leaning a little...connecting the art to the fireplace...this sort draws the eye to the overly simple mantle..

It’s too monochromatic. Bring in art to make the space more appealing.

It looks gorgeous. Would you want to frame it to make it stand out even more? This may have been addressed just so many comments lol!
