Comments (52)I think that might have been true in previous years... but with a rise in popularity... of anything, really... the quality takes a dive as quantity sold becomes more important. The market gets flooded with an inferior product as growers rush to cash in on the popularity. Case in point... the bulb I just recently bought at... what was it? Home Depot, I think... or Menard's... anyway, it has a very suspicious looking hole near the basal plate, looking very much like NBF damage. And this was a bulb that I took out of the box and checked over carefully! I didn't peel back any layers, of course... that might have seemed a little bit odd to the store clerks standing there watching me! My point is... be extra careful when buying the inexpensive kit bulbs from larger stores! Here's another case in point, with another "commodity"... remember when Disney's "Homeward Bound" hit the theaters? Up until that point, the American Bulldog was a relatively unknown rare breed. That one single movie pushed the breed to the height of popularity, and everyone and his brother went out and purchased a male and a female, hoping to make puppies and cash in on that popularity. The results have been a horrid decline in genetic health, longevity, temperament, intelligence, etc... There's an art and a science to proper breeding. We were originally approached by Disney... they wanted to purchase our dogs. We declined, knowing what would happen. It happened anyway... but I can sleep at night, knowing that we didn't contribute to the ruination of the breed we love. It makes me so angry... and so sad to know that a once rare and majestic breed is now just another casualty of greed....See MoreToo many favorites? How to delete?
Comments (6)If you are using Internet Explorer at the very top of the page click Favorites and then hold down the Shift key and click Organize Favorites. A window will open up that looks like Windows Explorer. You can delete or move favorites just like you would files. To select a block of favorites click on the first one then hold the shift key down and click on the last one. This will high light the entire block so you can delete it. To select individual favorites just hold down the Ctrl key and click on each one you want to delete to high light it. Then you can delete those all at once. Instead of deleting favorites I just create a new folder and call it Old Stuff and move all my unused favorites to it. You create a new file by clicking File>>New>>Folder Then just name the folder what ever you want. Pooh Bear...See MoreHow many hybrid teas or other favorite class of roses do you have?
Comments (9)When I first started to grow roses, I only have my eyes on hybrid teas which I consider the perfect" rose. I think about a fourth of my 35 plus roses are hybrid teas. However, in recent years, I have been moving towards floribundas, shrubs and climbers. I guess time and taste changes, in part due to our fellow rosarians on this forum, and the desire to have more natural looking bush forms. I only buy hybrid teas if there is something I find unique about it or a chance to have it because I couldn't find it in the past. I did buy Voodoo, Chicago Peace, Strike it Rich, Double Delight and About Face this year because I finally found them after a few years searching for them. But normally I would lean towards Austins and shrubs roses....See Morewhite roses: iceberg, bolero or flower carpet?
Comments (58)Hi, I am late to the thread but hopefully still be able to get some help here. We just moved into a house n the SF Bay Area - Zone 9b where the previous owner planted about 12 young icebergs in the front yard under the shades of 3 large magnolias. I was told she probergated her own roses. its late Oct. and although there a few blioms ans new buds forming, they dont look very healthy- some mildew, yellow leaves with brown edges and some black spots. i dont know if it’s the lack of direct sunlight , lack of water or the toxicity of the magnolias. They are on the East and South side of the house with dappled sunlight from morning until 3pm or so. With the water restriction, its difficult to give these young plants adequate water when any water is likely being robbed by the magnolias. Any suggestions on how to better grow the icebergs or should i replacement them with more hardy florabundas in simmlar shades? Your help and recommendations are much appreciated....See MoreAnn-SoCalZ10b SunStZ22
