Growing Zone 8a and 8b Palms In Zone 7a/7b Border
Comments (6)Actually, I just remembered a long time ago my friend had a California fan palm in his back yard, and it was grown locally from seed. I believe it was in the ground for quiet a few years and it was well established. It pulled through the winters unprotected, but his neighbor hood "code" made him cut it down because it still had the beard on it and even when pruned they still did not like it, he was not so happy about that. But I think I will be going with the California fan palm. Our winters are dry and it only gets really cold here for about 2 weeks until it starts to warm up. I'll give it a try!...See MoreAnyone growing Owari Satsuma in ground in zone 7b?
Comments (25)im growing Meyer lemon and Armstrong Satsuma in ground here in bixby ok. 7a. My technique is similar and based off of the guy Dave mentioned above. 25 C9 lights come on at 38F. I added a small heater that I only use when outside is below 15. The lights can maintain about 15 degrees above outside on their own. So far we have had several nights below 10. Covering is 2 layers of white frost cloth when its below 38 but above 20. Below 20 I add 1 plastic tarp and one green frost cloth. Water bottles are there to just help buffer the temps and add a little heat. Meyer is in full bloom right now. I plan to graft Miho and Dekopon/Sumo to the armstrong. mike...See Morezone 7b in a shady border
Comments (13)Many people are only used to seeing the bedding Impatiens they sell at garden centers and in catalogs, that have the flat flowers, wallerana and New Guinea Impatiens, but most of the other species worldwide have tubular flowers, and there are perennial, tuberosus species and species that grow from a thick caudex. All are adapted to there environments....See MoreFront bed landscape ideas in zone 7B
Comments (17)Another option, using the geranium and liriope suggested by laceyvail and gardengal (also "grew" the hawthorn, painted the steps/rail, and widened the shutters on the double windows): This is a variegated liriope; you could use the non-variegated for a darker green. Blooms purple/blue. The geranium is shown in winter coloration (leaves turn reds/purples), summer would be green with pale pink flowers. As the coral bark maple grows, it will balance the height of the house and perhaps provide enough shade for some ferns beneath it....See More- 5 years ago
