Comments (7)We have very much what you are describing, a wood bar at bar height with granite on the rest of the counters. Our peninsula is open to the eating area/family room around a corner. I admit, this is one area that was about form over function. I liked the way it highlights the open corner and separates the family room from the kitchen. Plus it is in my primary prep and cooking area (range adjacent) and I was afraid I'd feel like I was cooking in the family room without it. It also hides my little prep sink. The 25" counter depth does not seem too small to me, but I have lots of room to spread out side to side. We've never been a family to eat at an island or peninsula, and we don't use it that way now. In fact, we still haven't gotten any stools and I'm not entirely sure we will because people seem to enjoy just leaning against it or we use it to set up buffet style - whether it is a large family meal, or just snacks/hors d'oeuvres for visitors. Comments (39)I have not had time to read everyone's responses but your post reminded me of my kitchen. I got rid of the overhang to add storage cabinets instead and couldn't be happier. My width for kitchen and eating area was only 18.2 feet but I am so glad that I have 5 feet between the arms of the U. It allows 3 people to work comfortably and to move in and out without bumping each other. I will post the layout evolution and the reveal. I LOVE those outside peninsula storage cabinets- one is a "charging drawer" that has a power strip inside it for all those electronics that otherwise clutter the area. My boys think this is genius. Another holds all the office supplies for those who choose to work at the kitchen table. There is a coffee/tea drawer , a stationary supplies/mail drawer (where I hide accumulated unsorted mail when I have visitors), and an "empty" drawer to hold things cleared off the table when we need to eat. We have not used the small undercounter fridge except for company. There is even a large toekick drawer which is full of miscellaneous supplies- backup keys, batteries, dental floss, etc. We had never used the peninsula for seating in the 20 years we had been in the house so there was no hesitation getting rid of it. scrappy25 layout evolution scrappy25 reveal...See MoreWould you choose an island with no seating or eat-at peninsula?
Comments (6)I'm in the no-eating-at-an-island camp. I have a small island cart in my kitchen (11x15). It's a kitchen that is too wide to be a galley kitchen and too narrow to have a true island...and that's fine with me. If it were wide enough for an island, I'd have a big old farmhouse table and chairs in it. As I get older, I often need to sit while doing prep work and sitting and working at a table are far easier. I have a stool that goes with my island cart and can sit down there, but it's hard to sift flour etc while reaching up high. I like to see who might be joining me in a meal, ie looking across a table, not diner-style....See MoreJAN MOYER
