Help - Kitchen lighting placement (canned lights, peninsula pendants)
We are in the middle of a complete kitchen remodel and need some last minute help determining where our canned lighting should go within the kitchen. We first installed 4" LED canned lighting but now feel we have too many cans and are looking to simplify by changing to 6" LED cans and having less cans.
I'm hoping to get some feedback soon so we can make a decision. I'm attaching two images of our plans.
What we need help with most:
- Where should the 6" LED canned lighting be in the kitchen and how many should we have?
- Feedback on whether we should be using 4" or 6" is welcome; again, leaning towards using 6" cans.
Key consideration factors:
- There is one window in the kitchen where the sink is located. There will be a small 4" LED canned lighting directly over the sink.
- We have a G-shaped kitchen with a "L" shaped Peninsula. Peninsula allows for three bar stools. We originally were NOT going to do pendant lighting over the Peninsula but are now thinking of adding them. I've ID'd on the first diagram where the pendants will most likely go.
- Interior dimensions of the kitchen (from cabinet edge to cabinet edge) are 107" X 80".
- All cans and pendants will be on dimmers. Kitchen is white. Hardwood floors are dark.
- In the first diagram, item W363021 will be a dark zinc vent hood.

Lighting help in peninsula kitchen
Comments (0)We recently moved into a condo with a long/narrow room that includes a living room at one end and a peninsula kitchen on the other. The kitchen has a pretty wide counter top and lots of stainless steel throughout. We are looking to put our own style into the place and are having a touch time deciding what to do with the lighting. We were thinking of replacing the hanging pendants with something a bit more rustic/farmhouse/industrial, but not sure what to do with the flush mounted light in the center of the room. Would love your recommendations on whether to go to recessed lighting (which is further down the room by the dining and living area), track, hanging, flush, or something else. We are likely going to be swamping out the hanging pendants also and will make a decision on their style once we figure out who to do with the main flush mounted light. Comments (1)I don't have pendents or recessed lighting - so no help there, but if you don't have under cabinet lighting, add that to your list. My under cabinet lighting is the most helpful lighting I have. At a guess, I would say 2 pendants over the island, but your lighting store should also be able to help you. It depends on what you use and if your recessed lights light up the island - then pendants aren't necessary. Comments (11)And for any who saw that I deleted my post for the two pictures? Yes. because just because solid feels bulkier to me :........maybe it doesn't to the OP. They both FIT. it's the feel: ) The Target LAMP shade test is still a good way to test before you buy, unless an easy return on the actual pendant. I agree - blowing balloons for a test should be outlawed. What a PITA!!!! LOL...See More

The foot print of the space inside the kitchen is just under 9feet X 6feet.
Additional natural light comes from the top left area of the diagram. Just outside the frame of the diagram is the dinette area which has windows on both walls. There is a door with windows which leads to back porch in the diagram.
We had a light designer come to the house and after taking into his feedback as well as the link Lawrence Sprowls directed me to, we are going to keep the 4" LED cans and not switch to 6" inch cans. We are also going to focus the lights on the surface areas where food prep happens.
I've updated my diagram to reflect the light which comes in through the adjacent dinette area and the back porch door. I've also added the locations of proposed 4" inch cans.
I don't know if we should put another 4" can where the circled #3 is in the diagram. We aren't planning to light those cabinets which have windows in them. We don't prep food on that side of the kitchen; it is space where the mini-oven, Google home and music player has lived.
