You're pitching the patio to drain, but it's edge should meet the grade flush and then the surrounding grade be pitched to also drain away from the patio. Are you doing this?

I think you're describing how you're preparing the edge in part, but not how you're finishing it.

It sounds like you might seed some grading work.

FYI. pictures really help by explaining things that people don't comment on. Complete, wide scenes taken that show how the problems-space relates to the larges space are generally helpful. To capture them from not too far away, takes a series of slightly overlapping pictures that pan the scene from right to left.

Thank you for the reply! Yes, the edge is flush with the surrounding grade. One side is up against (and flush) with our concrete pool deck. The opposite side is our yard, where we are slopping towards.

Our yard naturally slopes towards our pool/house. However, the yard surrounding the pool does have a slope itself that is opposite of the yard. So we have a situation where the natural grade of our yard is running opposite of the grade of the yard surrounding the pool by ~12 feet (this is where our patio is going).

My concern here is that the two opposite slopes sort of meet at this point. This is where the edge of our patio will be. While the patio will be flush with the lawn, there is still a very very slight slope back toward the patio. I'm concerned that with the amount of rain running of the patio, and the slight negative grade from the yard, we will have a mess.

I've thought of digging even further, to create make sure the negative slope of the yard doesn't meet the patio. I could add some landscaping, or something similar, so that there is no "ditch" or anything that is created at the edge of the patio.

I do have a few photos I can share. It's still a work in progress. I don't have panoramic pictures as it has been raining (ignore the standing water in the photos!).

If I understand the conditions correctly, you ARE in the process of creating a drainage problem ... a part of the patio that doesn't drain for a lengthy period of time after the storm has finished.

As I understand it, the overall downslope of the yard is from back to front ...? The rainwater runoff that leaves your yard is going to be leaving via somewhere along the front property line and into the street ...? (It has to be that or somewhere along the side property lines, which we have no knowledge of.) Immediately at the back of the house, water drains away from the structure toward the back lot line for a short run ...? Somehow, some way, you must direct water toward one or both sides of the house in order that it can continue on toward the front, and then escape from the property. Information about this escape route is what we don't have. You'll need to make sure this route is of sufficient capacity to handle the largest rains you'll get and that it has no obstructions (dams).

Dry wells are usually not good solutions as it is difficult to add enough capacity to handle the largest storms. (This could be a massive amount of water.) A drain that runs to lower elevation is a better solution provided that the pipe and catch basin are sized to handle the largest rains AND that a sufficiently lower elevation exists! An even better solution, though sometimes more costly is proper surface grading. Open, downhill sloping grade doesn't clog! If it were to become dammed, by tree litter or something, the obstruction would be visible, obvious and easily correctable. An obstruction in a 100' run of buried pipe would be more difficult to notice and correct. What I'm suggesting is that if you can keep the drainage solution at the surface it will be more reliable and lower maintenance. But "IF" depends a lot on the conditions that exist overall (again, which we can't see and know nothing of. You'd need to convey them in order to get reasonable advice about working with them.) Often overlooked is the flume, which serves essentially the same function as a pipe, but it lies at the surface and is open, as in a trough. In order to carry enough water, it could be deep and narrow, but this might cause safety issues or conflicts with using the yard. Likewise, it can be wide and shallow ... sometimes it does double by being a sidewalk when it is not raining. Many driveways, if they are troughed or have raised shoulders serve also as flumes though this is not their primary, obvious function.

(BTW, without the pictures, I wouldn't have any idea what your situation involved.)
