should i be worried that my cherries buds have nothing so far?
Comments (4)All my sweet cherries have flowered and now have leaves. One has small fruits. If these were bareroot trees and you just planted, then I could see them not having leaves. I've got a bareroot pear that I put in almost 2 months ago and it still hasn't done a thing. I'm pretty sure its toast (it had very little in the way of roots)...but I'll give it another month....See MoreIs my 2' serviceberry about to blossom and leaf out?
Comments (3)olreader, I'm north of you and have a recently planted apple tree flowering now. I also have a picea pungens 'Waldbrunn' planted a month ago with 3 buds pushing. Roses are blooming now, too. I think this is due to a couple of factors, 1 being the flood last year, our very warm fall and above normal precip this year. We're at 17.5 inches precip. so far compared to a normal annual total of about 13 inches. As bboy said, there's nothing to be done. I am hoping new buds set before winter comes. If not, we'll be doing some pruning in the spring. Barb...See MoreNo sign yet of hostas - should I worry?
Comments (12)Not all "zones" are created equal. I'm zone 7 on Long Island, NY, and all but one of my hostas are still pips and barely furling. Yet I see photos from people in zone 5 and 6 with fully leafed out hostas. I think it has to do with how steady the temperatures are. My NY zone 7 has relatively stable steady temperatures compared to a zone 7 in the middle of the country, where a week of 80 degree heat in March could get all the hostas to leaf out. The more you garden, the more you'll learn your microclimate. In my experience, the NOID "green ones" and "green and white ones" that have been around for decades tend to leaf out in my area way earlier than the new hybridized varieties. This early in the year, I wouldn't worry at all. However, if you don't see anything in a few weeks, I'd carefully dig one up. You said this is your first year in that zone, so I'm assuming its a new house, and there's always the possibility that you have some kind of vole or pest of some kind....See MoreI'm not worried about this
Comments (12)Yes, they are pretty advanced but they will be set out pretty soon. I'm not concerned with reducing the purple appearance unless somebody has something to say that indicates it is in some way unhealthy. I am curious about what it is. Of course I see it every year but this time it is a brighter color. The rest of the leaf is a nice dark green. Fertilizer analysis is 7-9-5 in a liquid and so the ratios are about the same as those mentioned. It's called Dyna-Gro and I went to it for the wide variety of trace elements it carries. Heretofore I used Schultz Plant Food Plus, also a liquid at 10-15-10. It's difficult to know what concentration is used for any of these products, so I've followed the label recommendations pretty closely, which means that they get a little more of the Dyna-Gro than they used to get of the Schultz. It results in continuous feeding with a weak amount of fertilizer in the water. Considering that these plants are as big as they are at 4 weeks from seed, it doesn't look as though they lack for very much. I've done my plants like this for years and they have always done well as I expect them to do this year also. I do let them get large but with the quart container there is plenty of root mass to support the foliage. And these plants are not leggy. A few of the stems caliper at over 3/8". In the past I have set them out at 5 weeks with no hardening off and no signs of stress of any kind. They just take right off and I expect these to do the same. With all the warm weather we've been having, I might even set them out a bit early. I did delay planting about a week because I knew that I wouldn't have a planting bed ready. The question I was asking is not whether anything is wrong but whether anyone has any actual knowledge of what this is and whether it indicates anything. The consensus seems to be about the lights. Maybe so, except, same lights. Then again, perhaps I will have to go on wondering. Thanks for all the responses....See Morerifis (zone 6b-7a NJ)
