Attached or Detached Garage?
Comments (2)We recently moved and our new [to us] house has a two-car attached garage. We find it very convenient, especially on those -40 degree days. I put an overhead unit heater in and we keep it turned down to above freezing and we keep our freezer and extra fridge in the garage, along with the treadmill. Our previous house had a two-car detached garage. It also had an overhead unit heater and we used it in much the same way. One advantage to a detached garage is that if you use it as a shop and have a mishap such as a fire, you don't burn the house down. That is not a consideration for you as you don't plan to use it as a shop. Overall, we like the convenience of attached, especially given our climate....See MoreHelp with detached garage with sliding doors
Comments (2)Thanks vancleaveterry! I found a website where someone had rigged the opener crosswise across the garage ceiling and then attached a post to the garage door, so maybe something like that would work. You don't see too many sliding doors anymore, but there are a bunch of Eichler houses in this area who have the original sliding doors, so we may be able to find an installer. I think that we are thinking replacing the doors would probably be the best solution , though, and then we'll need to add a door to the garage. $$$. Of course, we also have a gated driveway, so we'll need an opener for that if we want to leave it closed when we're gone. Our COE is not for another week, so I'll have to wait until then to look closer at the doors....See MoreHelp with location for detached garage
Comments (10)2. (will you be required to take down the old garage. i ask because odds are you'll never be able to build it again.) 3. in any case, assuming the garage doors face the street. i'd turn the current paving next to your current garage, and a bit more (wider), for backing around. you might do this in pavers rather than asphalt. more expensive but it makes it look like patio. you'll have more wiggle room. and of course it will help with how much permeable square footage you have....See MoreLost Power to Entire Detached Garage
Comments (8)As Dewayne said there should be a panel in the garage but it may not look like the one in the house especially if the house panel was replaced in 2019 ( I hope ) but the one in the garage is original to 1953. The 1953 panel will just be a disconnect with or without fuses, and with fuses they may be screw in plug fuse or a buss fuse about 2" long. Look for a small box 6" by 8" with a handle on it, open it and see if there are fuses in it. What comes next is up to you, pull and check the fuses or have someone do it for you. another problem is If the underground wire from the breaker to the garage is original to 1953 they did not make very good plastic polymers back then and the wire coating could have disintegrated, cracked and wire exposed to the soil. Copper normally doesn't corrode but it may corrode through involving 5 different soil conditions. In other words a wire is broken and needs to be checked with a continuity test to verify a busted wire....See MorePPF.
