I've got 25 lbs. of Lesco 18-0-3 from last year.....it was a 50 lb. bag and the guy at Site One told me what spreader setting to use......so I guess I only used 25 lbs. last November to winterize a 7500 sq. ft. lawn. Based on what you guys are saying, I didn't use enough last year and should use more this year?

Most vegetable waste is N-poor. Legumes, which most people believe are N-rich, nave N values much less than 1%. Lettuce has never been considered to be a great source of dietary protein (N). Grasses and fresh leaves fall into this category. Their N content is much less than 1%. Here are some NPK values to chew on... If you want to use something organic as a "green" or as a fertilizer, pick something with a large first number. If you want something "brown" pick something with a first number less than 1. Or anything else you happen to stumble upon in your Big Box Store that has a high first number and low second or third numbers and is cheap. 35-0-5. 30-2-5. 25-5-5. Anything like that is great, just to throw some example numbers at random. Name brands aren't necessary. Mine comes in a big brown bag labeled "Urea. Fertilizer Grade. 46-0-0." $12.50 per fifty pound bag.

Hi @User! It's good to see you! Generally, organics are best digested in warm soil (approximately 70F, with available oxygen, available nitrogen and available moisture. That is when the soil bacteria are at their most efficient. If you have any periods left prior to "winter" conditions which approach those conditions, you may have some feeding accomplished prior to next season. If not, then the organics may have to sit, waiting for the proper conditions to be digested. As long as you don't stand the danger of losing them due to erosion, and as long as there really isn't any danger of stimulating a lot of soft, sappy growth before the danger period, why not put it down now? You likely have a lot to juggle once winter ends so if you can get some of it accomplished now, more power to you!
