Furniture Design Dilemma living room

Help! My living room needs some TLC.

We just moved into our first home. The previous owners used the living space as the dining room but we are switching it back. We were excited to get a new sectional but once we got it into our space, we are not totally loving the look of it. We are hoping to make it work with the furniture we currently own and could really use some suggestions regarding the layout, rug, decor, etc to tie it all together. We were also planning to move the chandelier and replace with a flush mount or another pot light. Thank you in advance for your input! Why do you think you aren't loving the sectional? Does it feel too big for the room? I'd be inclined to place the long side (not chaise side) facing the TV. Speaking of which, is the TV at the right height for you? Is that its optimal spot? Did you place it there so you could watch it from the kitchen?

Yes, that's exactly it! It felt too big and seemed to overpower the room. I will try moving it around tonight as you suggested with placing the long side facing the TV and see if that works better. And yes, the TV placement was to be able to watch it from the kitchen and we just used the electric fireplace as the stand for now. Should we try moving it across from the sectional?

Do you need the storage or do you just want to fill the empty space? If you don't need shelves, I would consider getting a large floor vase with some natural filler. Or you could hang a textile or some shallow baskets on the wall. A larger rug would help the warm up the space and make the sitting area look more cohesive. If you have another spot for your rug, I would consider getting a larger one.

thank you! I have considered this but still worried because my fireplace is not centered to the room. plus you would see chairs as soon as you walk in the front door. do you think either of those things would be bad?

Also wondering if I can get away with putting a rug under the coffee table? Still need an end table for the other end of the sectional. Really having a hard time finding something that looks like it would go in the room.

IMO you should have got a sofa instead but I think its okay probably more an issue of a lot different than what you had so takes time to adjust. I would certainly try the suggested placement of the sectional to see if that makes a difference I really don’t like the TV there but I think I would remove that fireplace and get a linear one if you want one and then the TV would be a the proper viewing height.

Well, the fireplace looks nice centred on the wall. Will it look out of place on the wall with the opening? I'd try it if it were easy to move. Just to see. As for your sectional, if it can be returned, consider it because if you feel it overpowers the room, it will be difficult to work around it.

Congrats on your first home!

I would do two simple things to help the space...I would replace the fireplace with a low console table to rest the TV on. Then, I would get a large rug to anchor the furniture in the room and make the furniture feel more cohesive in layout. Add in artwork and I'm sure the room will feel much more welcoming and put together!
