Laundry Room Appliances Design Dilemma

Replacing Maytag MAH2400AWW

Hi all... My Maytag washer is broken. I'd like to buy a replacement washer, but unfortunately they don't make this model anymore, and it doesn't look like Maytag has a 24" model. So that means I would have to mix and match brands. My question is - does anyone know of a front loading washer that is compatible with a maytag stacking kit? Thanks!

I remember that washer (Samsung built) for Maytag circa 2003/2004. Depending on how the stacking kit is attached you may be able to re-use it. If it's the type of stacking kit that (screws) into the top of the washer it may work. Also it depends on the material the top of the replacement washer is compose of. You could also google (universal stacking kit) for 24" washer and see what happens.

Whirlpool bought Maytag and I looked at the stack kits for Whirlpool compact washers and they are completely different than the Maytag stacking kit. The stacking kit for the Samsung compact washer is also different. Perhaps you could build a shelf for the dryer and slide a replacement washer underneath.

I just did a wash to see how the washer was doing. My husband has taken over most of the laundry chores (after I turned his new plaid shirt pink). I had a large load of jeans, towels, etc. which had a fair amount of clay in it (my pottery clothes). I had on extra large, whites, and extra rinse. Everything came out fine. Since our laundry detergent became more concentrated we've had problems with clothes not rinsing well and then the water in the washer doesn't drain well in the spin cycle. We had someone come out to check on it and he told us what was wrong and recommended we use less detergent and use the white wash rather than the others. I think now when we have problems its because we used too much detergent. My husband is also questioning if we should be using the white wash all the time even when we have dark loads. I think the bigger problem is that the machine is 11 1/2 years old and, as dadoes said, is not the "classic Maytag of long-term reliability." I had gotten the Groupon thinking it was time for a new washer and thinking we might want a front loader which I knew would be expensive. Due to my indecision, my Groupon has expired. But I still think it's time to at least start thinking about a new machine. So I guess I'm still wondering if anyone has any idea of how long this machine might last - I'm assuming it's not 30 years but could it be 20?? Also, if anyone has recommendations for a pretty basic washing machine - simple to use, lasts a long time, gets clothes clean without destroying them. The less time and thought put into laundry the better for us.

Whirlpool owns Maytag, yet oddly doesn't manufacture either of the two washers you're considering. The Maytag is a Korean machine made by Samsung; the Whirlpool is from Italian manufacturer Antonio Merloni Group, best known in the U.S. as the parent company of Asko. Indeed, there's an Asko-branded machine (WCAM1812) that's nearly identical to the Whirlpool LHW0050P, except that it can dry as well as wash your laundry. Both the wash-only and wash/dry machines are also sold under the Eurotech brand, sometimes for less $ than the better-known Whirlpool- or Asko-branded equivalents. Although I have no direct experience with either of these machines, Samsung is reputed to be more reliable than AM. Nonetheless, I'd favor the Whirlpool for its considerably larger capacity (despite not being any larger on the outside), and because the Maytag lacks internal water heating. Even if you set the temperature controls to warm or hot, you might get cold water (and poor cleaning) if your water heater is not very close to your washing machine. Since front-load washers draw only a small amount of water, much of the water will have cooled off in the pipes between the water heater tank and the washer. The Whirlpool heats its own water though, up to 140Â°F (i'm not clear on whether it heats water to a lower temperature on the warm-water settings, or doesn't heat it at all unless set for a hot-water wash - the online info isn't very specific). Looking both of these over in stores, they both appear to be reasonably well made. The Whirlpool's door latch and detergent drawer are a tad flimsy for my tastes, although they should hold up well if you aren't rough with them.

We did call a repairman, and there's nothing wrong with the timer. Two of the buttons were slightly depressed, and it stopped the thing from working. Dumb! He's changing the belts while he's here, and we'll be good to go.

This 7500 had the hard water buildup, but I just did a few hot washes on extra long cycles with pure citric acid followed with another regular wash with no clothes in the tub. That seemed to cut through the hard water deposits. It never stopped working though and never gave us a problem. The old 4000 was fine after cleaning out the soap scum buildup from never using hot water for 4 years. I sold it off to a neighbor for 50 bucks years ago. They still use it. Im just doing it to do it BEFORE something happens to me that I wont be able to do it. I am having more and more physical ailments and just fear that something may happen that will render me unable to do it if I wait a few more years. I also am at the age that you just never know what may happen next, and if I should suddenly be gone, the wife and daughter will not have a machine that is near end of life, but rather fully ready to go another 10-15 years. When I say I am restoring it , I mean I have what would cost over 3000 dollars in parts sitting in my garage to do this restoration. Of course I only spent about 1000.00 on my parts by grabbing deals on Ebay (all brand new parts). I also have several control boards for each machine and control panels and even multiple motor and motor control boards. Yeah, kinda got obsessed with picking up the good deals but with all the crying going on about board failures I did pick up more than enough. The original boards are still going strong. Ill keep the original boards for backups or people in need. I still use Sears detergent and its doing a good enough job for us. Definitely buy in bulk when it goes on sale, and I do a citric acid load every other month for the hard water issue.

Argh... Thanks @minimalist183 and @Lawrence. What's concerning for me is that there doesn't seem to be a clear answer and the idea of getting a new appliance delivered and having it not work makes me pretty uncomfortable. I may just have to bite the bullet and buy a new pair of appliances and hope that company doesn't get bought or go out of business! Maybe Samsung is the way to go.

If I were you I would consider purchasing a new 24" washer/dryer stack. The Maytag dryer you own is about 16yrs old and could fail at anytime. There having been numerous 24" compact washer/dryer stacks introdcued to the market since 2004. I would only consider:

MIele $2400 - $4500

Bosch $1600 -$2000 (I like the 800 Series $2000)

Electrolux $1900

Whirlpool $1900

I'm not a fan of Samsung or LG products.

Did you ever find a solution for

I have the same problem now and just

spent $600.00 to repair the dryer and

now the washer is beyond repair.

Build a sturdy shelf, place the dryer on it and the washer in the space below. The dryer will be on the shelf, not directly atop the washer so no need for a stacking kit or matching the washer to the dryer brand.

The Electrolux ELFW4222AW (also at Walmart) compact washer performed well in CR's tests and is much less expensive than any Miele washer. If it held a stacked dryer, you could do what @dadoes suggested above to support the dryer.
