Getting rid of Cardboard stains on new sheets
Comments (9)@dave1812 I'm not on my high horse (it's knowing where to draw the line). It's one thing when manufactures make big mistakes and expect you (the consumer) to "deal" with your decision to purchase their products and do nothing about it when a product fails due to manufacturing or defective parts. But it's another when an honest mistake is made by the consumer that looks to point fingers at everyone else and expects everyone else to compensate for their own error. My mother raised me to be responsible for the errors of my ways and not hold someone else responsible. I'm sure either the store or manufacture would "be happy" (not really) to reimburse or replace the sheets because this is unfortunately the world we live in now. Where people think everything is someone else's fault. When in fact we are sick of dealing with you and the complaining and just want you out of the store. Personally I would suck it up and chalk it up to a lesson learned and not make that mistake again. That is what jockewing is doing here, trying to get legitimate help on removing a stain they accidentally caused. Jockewing isn't looking for a hand out but a solution. By the way jockewing, has the staining lightened up any?...See MorePalm Dishes 2010 & Percale Sheets 2011 ?
Comments (9)I agree with beverly. Many of us are trying, but this forum is a shadow of its old self. The old posts cropping up make it more time consuming to scroll through and filter through the old and new. One of the reasons the old site worked so well is that you could check it instantly without investing a lot of time and effort; besides, it was always fun to see the new posts; and just about anything that was newly listed was, in fact, really new. I think the bigger issue is the change in how photos are now in the control of houzz once they are posted. Really a shame, as the photos are what make the forum lively and fresh. Understandably, many now are reluctant to share a glimpse into their own homes if they don't know what will happen to the image eventually. I hope the new site will listen.....the forum will only be as good as the members who contribute....See MoreVintage Washed Percale Sheets
Comments (75)By the way....a few old-time tips on ironing cotton, including sheets. It is much harder to get good results if the sheet (or other item) has been dried and you rewet it with a mister or use steam. It is best for the item to be uniformly and slightly damp, and then you don't need or want a mister or steam. If your washer spins fast enough to remove most of the water (as most front-loaders now do) you can iron directly from the washer. In the old days washers had a mangle (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mangle_(machine) which would press the excess water out before ironing...eventually some mangles were even heated. If you mist you just won't get the fabric evenly wet enough to iron it easily or well, and a steam setting takes much longer and results are not as good. The old timey way, if not ironed directly from washing, was to wet the fabric before ironing by "sprinkling" with water, which added a lot more water than a mister. Search for "vintage cork sprinkler" on ebay and you'll see what was used! I remember that when my mother didn't have time to iron immediately after washing she would roll up the items while damp and place in the freezer in a plastic bag. When she had time to iron, the items would thaw pretty quickly, and they were uniformly wet. When cotton is uniformly wet, you do want to use the highest setting on the iron, which is usually for cotton and linen. But keep the iron moving of course! And of course a bit of MamaPinky's starch will give an ultra smooth finish!...See MorePercale sheets on bed. Ready for tonight :-O
Comments (18)Roc, my mother was like yours, imacculate organization..even in her dish pan, she always hand washed dishes and after rinsing in hot water she put the silverware all in the hot soapy dishwater on the right hand side all facing the same direction and heaven forbid anyone put a fork or something in in the wrong direction. She also had us as kids remove our towels from the bottom, very carefully so as not to disturb the neatness of the upper towels. She vacumed the carpeted living room daily but she liked the lines the vacume sweeper made on the carpet and got rather irritated when someone walked over her freshly lined carpet..we used to joke we needed a hover board, even before hover boards were heard of. I find myself often thinking of my mother when I do something the way she did and I think oh my I've turned into the greatest woman that ever lived...lol. I try hard to have a clean well orginized home, but its not perfect and never will be LOL. Roc I would love to see you open a textile business, what beauty and perfect linen you would produce.
