Percale sheets on bed. Ready for tonight :-O
Comments (18)Roc, my mother was like yours, imacculate organization..even in her dish pan, she always hand washed dishes and after rinsing in hot water she put the silverware all in the hot soapy dishwater on the right hand side all facing the same direction and heaven forbid anyone put a fork or something in in the wrong direction. She also had us as kids remove our towels from the bottom, very carefully so as not to disturb the neatness of the upper towels. She vacumed the carpeted living room daily but she liked the lines the vacume sweeper made on the carpet and got rather irritated when someone walked over her freshly lined carpet..we used to joke we needed a hover board, even before hover boards were heard of. I find myself often thinking of my mother when I do something the way she did and I think oh my I've turned into the greatest woman that ever lived...lol. I try hard to have a clean well orginized home, but its not perfect and never will be LOL. Roc I would love to see you open a textile business, what beauty and perfect linen you would produce. Comments (97)I have some of the Target Threshold percales. One set was returned a month later as the fitted split down the middle, another was returned several months later falling apart at the elastic. Some of the print ones are rarely used but are ok...a white fitted that's used all the time is shredding at the elastic corners..Threshold has several makers, some are made in China and some in India. some of the exact sheets feel ok in the package and some feel like parachute fabric. Although with sheets now being treated with different chemicals like insecticide you really can't tell how a sheet will really feel until its had a number of good washes. All in all most of the Threshold sheets are worth buying, they arnt expensive so I guess if you use them regularly and they last a year its all good. Personally I feel sheets should be an investment, buy a few really good quality sheets and your set. I only use vintage percales, 100% long staple cotton....love them....See MoreHow to wash Old Unused Cotton bedding?
Comments (13)Le Blanc is said to be -- said to be -- designed for vintage linens. It claims to remove stains and whiten. I have never tried using it that way, to be fair, and haven't found in my use of it that it does any whitening. It does condition and I do find a significant improvement in texture using it. So it's fascinating to hear that an overnight soak gets results. Need to try that out. LB was, BTW, recommended to me by a bed linen retailer who really knows his stuff. I had used it in a test drive a few years before and thought meh. But at that time I was trying to white and deodorize using a very good Bosch FL but one without a heater. Soaking, as mamapinky has said so many times, will help old textiles a lot, I find. It helps with stain removal unless it's carbon steel. But the best whitening is the profile wash with hot water. Back in the 70s I bought organza place mats and napkins and an amazing embroidered organza tablecloth in Venice. I didn't use them for years and they yellowed terribly. I gave them a hot wash in the old Asko -- don't even recall the detergent -- and they were completely renewed. Ironically, the best detergent I've ever found for removing stains -- from lipstick to red wine -- is Forever New which is basically a super high end lingerie wash. It also whitens. When DD1 poured a glass of red wine on my new rug it took the stain out immediately. But it's so costly it is practical only for specialized uses. You make a paste, rub that in, let it sit overnight and presto. But vintage bed linens, I think, really do need a sanitary/boil wash. Use the detergent on hand and then see the results. Rewashing is always an option. @enduring -- the percale sheets I bought about 10 years ago were at the Sferra warehouse sale. The best place to find them these days is on eBay after one of the warehouse sales which are twice a year. There was one a few weeks ago. I've rarely seen Sferra Full sheets. Usually they are queen and that will be too large for full as they are oversized. But lo and behold, here's a full sheet set. Percale, 200 thread count (so basic percale) from a Jersey seller. The only caution is that these are made in Portugal, not Italy, and that the fitted sheet is 16" deep. $135 for a Sferra percale sheet set is quite decent. But best to see what the competition is asking for a full set made in Portugal. Shipping also seems reasonable. I like this brand and with the mangle it should be heavenly on that guest bed....See MorePercale Sheet Clearance at Target-In-Store Only
Comments (37)Cuddledown is an excellent source. I visited their store in Maine years ago. IMO they have excellent basics and luxuries. There are no bargains and I don't care for their shipping costs. However, it is difficult to duplicate that quality today and while they are expensive they are not ridiculous. I bought a superb bed pad from them and a summer quilt blanket that is feather-light but warm -- exactly what we needed. Have never tried their percale sheets but wouldn't hesitate if I needed a set. I have a king duvet from them that I could not afford to buy today. It is more than 20 years old. It needed refilling and they did it perfectly for about $100. I also have their down pillows, same story, with more than 20 years of service from those. Reliable, reliable, reliable -- and 1980s quality. And that's saying something today....See MoreAlex Chicago
