I don't know when I've enjoyed a novel this much!
Chapter headings are startling (to me) quotes from newspapers speaking to the casual acceptance of racism in America in the 1920's. The story goes back and forth from a nasty Jim Crow City of Portland to Harlem, where our narrator grows up in a tavern/bordello in a New York dominated by the Mafia.
