My Very First Canning Venture went well... pretty much.
Comments (4)Congratulations Robin! That's an ambitious first canning session. My first was 4 half-pints of pickled garlic using a jelly kit my roommate had surprised me with, because she knew I was interested in canning. Your asparagus is fine and safe. You don't want it packed too tight or you could create a situation where air bubbles get trapped, which makes the heat processing less effective. Pickled asparagus or dilly beans packed too tight are not safe. Packed too loose is fine. I believe some people can the leftover brine by itself with no veg in it (remember it must come up to the proper headspace, no excess air). Then you can open the brine to use in the next batch. I make dilly beans with as many jars of long ones as I can, then do the trimmings in their own jars. The short pieces seem to stay crisper, I think. Also they are just the right size for oil & vinegar potato salad. There's no safety issue with not washing the pans, but it could cause a quality problem. 1, that smidgen of leftover pectin is getting cooked a long time as the second batch boils, which could affect texture. 2, the stuck-on stuff could burn (as you mentioned) or get overcooked and make the next batch taste less fresh. But if you're just talking about a thin coating of leftover liquid, you could just rinse it, or wipe it out with paper towels. If it's starting to jell I would wash it. So glad you had a good experience! I'm still picking out which weekend this month to pick raspberries for jam. Can't wait! Melissa...See MoreTook the plunge
Comments (5)jsvand- i don't know that there are nematodes, but from what I've read they are everywhere. I don't want to take a chance. Also after the winter we had this year I think I'd like the ability to bring plants indoors to avoid freezes. Also I have limited space as I have two giant oak trees that shade most of my yard so I'll need to maintain a smaller size with everything else. Plus there's almost no room to dig with the oak roots running rampant. dghays- is there a way to control the fruit fly? I'm guessing not though, huh? Oh, what have I done?...See MoreFinally took the plunge
Comments (3)Curious about the aerobic system - We live in Houston Texas and have an aerobic system it works great and that is all that is allowed in Harris and Montgomery Texas. I did not know they would work in a climat that had a lot of freezing?...See MoreOver Zealous Fertilizer Maniac? Need help with fert sched.
Comments (1)Yowza!! I'd say you are overdoing it by about 10 products!! For what are essentially annual or seasonal plantings, you don't need to get too sophisticated. I'd stick with the water soluble or liquid formulations and likely just the Jobes and the Neptune's Harvest. Even Miracle Gro would be pretty adequate for your needs. Ideally, if you can get your hands on any Dyna Gro (Foliage Pro or GROW) you would be good to go with just that.......period. In my climate, container gardeners often fertilize - dilutely - with every watering. I do the Dyna Gro GROW at half strength once a week. Without being more familiar with your climate and the frequency of watering needs it's difficult to say how often you need to fert, but the more frequently one waters, the more frequently one will need to replace the nutrients that are leached out. And I too use the neem oil for most insect and fungal issue as well, so I'd be inclined to keep that in my arsenal....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
