don't yell at me. anyone paint a countertop?
Comments (17)It's our funky bar that's running us into problems, too. Per dh's measurements, which I will say looked GREAT..we were given an estimate of $750 for the product alone. This was on the low end, cheapest edge. But, with installation it put us around $1400. Dh is very handy and does a lot of DIY stuff. But, with all the angles we have on our counter, and this bar he's very hesitant. If you're off even 1/16 of an inch, you could be screwed if you're doing it yourself. Because you're liable for the measurements. If we have them install, they'll come out and measure and anything that goes wrong, falls on them. But, more for labor then the product, UGH. That kills me. I kind of like the idea of trying the paint thing myself. That'll buy us some time till next yr when we can do the Hi-mac that we like so well. It's around $2200 and not in the budget right now. But, spending $1400 just to get something I really don't like. Because the color of the stuff I have now doesn't match my new paint, seems a waste....See Morewaterfall countertops -- a trend?
Comments (48)It depends on your location about how trendy it is, or whether it might even be on the way out. In the Chicago area it has become so widespread we are seeing it in housing developments and new condo buildings. That can be a sign it is no longer special, since it has "reached the masses" haha - therefore people who are into watching that kind of thing will not be putting waterfall island counters into their kitchens. The last charity Design Home I saw (they take a mansion and have different interior designers do each room, then have tours, and the proceeds go to charity), the kitchen island counter was super-thick wood (maybe oak), heavily polyurethaned for a high shine, with an old-timey slightly distressed stain so it looked like reclaimed wood, but wasn't. It must have cost a ton, but I'd say that will be the thing to do for $150k+ kitchens, and the waterfall stone counter won't be. But that is super high end, FWIW....See MoreDon't like my new countertops
Comments (19)Wow thank you so much everyone. These comments have been incredibly helpful. I really like painted kitchen cabinets, but I think based on this great feedback we will probably just replace the backsplash, and then paint. (This whole project started because I just wanted to paint the walls and trim, but then thought well we should replace the counter before we paint the walls, but then the countertop company said they couldn't easily replace the countertop without replacing all the tile too....) My husband called the countertop company this morning, and they say they will honor the original quote for counter/tile and come out a SECOND time and do the tear out and replacement of the tile - when they could have done the tear out of counter and tile all at once - so they are being very accommodating to my fickleness. Will definitely replace the light switch plate and pulls. I hadn't thought of that....See MoreWhy don't I see more white cooktops used on white kitchen counters?
Comments (39)I had a kenmore white smooth top range for 3 years. It was wonderful. So easy to clean. I used all kinds of pans on it including cast iron. Never a single scratch or issue. When I moved out it looked as perfect as the day I moved in. I honestly didn't understand why people hated smooth top stoves. We bought a house that came with a coil stove. I've never hated anything more in my life, so difficult to clean. So I finally upgraded to a smooth top range. I could only find black tops. Even the white ranges have black tops. I can see why everyone hates them now. Used it once. ONCE. Already bubbles that I guess I'm going to have to use a razor to get out. I never dreamed of using a razor on my white one. And I could use a rough sponge. Not this one. Everything I do I'm going to be afraid of ruining it. Ugh. Next time I'm definitely spending a little more money and converting to a gas range. I would think modern technology would have this issue fixed....See MoreRita / Bring Back Sophie 4 Real
