Oh no, Paul James the Gardener Guy's manual method, maybe I will buy a goat. Better yet, I will pay the neighborhood kids $10 a bushel for all the grass they can pull from the clumps. Will need to try watering before pulling. Anything has to be better. (Propane torch?, Nah.)

The only ferts my grasses get is an occasional bit of compost tea, very dilute. Apart from that, they get nutrients from decomposing mulch and that's it. Ornamental grasses really don't benefit from overly fertile soil, and can get too floppy if there's too much nutrient. I remember reading, on this forum, someone's experience with lawn ferts and A. donax, and I believe it was a positive one. I've never grown it, so I can't speak to it's need for ferts. I wouldn't put any Weed-n-Feed type stuff anywhere near any ornamental grasses, but I don't use any of it anyway. I'm trying to get rid of lawn, not encourage it.

I feel your pain on Zoysia. I absolutely HATE this stuff. You really need to use a non-selective weed killer. Not to sound like an ad, but I stick with RoundUp. You want something that works very fast, because you WILL need multiple applications in order to feel confident you killed it. Drench the whole area with RU. Do not cut the lawn at this point since RU is absorbed through the green leaves, so the more green available the better. Then, wait a few weeks and get up close and personal and again hit any green you see with RU. You may at this point want to trim it back a little shorter (maybe cut the top 1/3). This will allow you to see whether there is any green underneath. Wait another two to three weeks, then do it again. I know this sounds excessive, but you are taking on the Ivan Drago of grasses. You will likely want to remove the dead Zoysia because it is would be impossible to seed through a lawn as thick a Zoysia. Because this is a very time consuming process, I usually being the process in July. I chose July because: 1) the Zoysia will have FINALLY turned green by then and 2) October is the best time to plant grass seen in Maryland. Hello Rod, I had the same problem, tried several different chemicals, none with success. Either they didn't kill the Kikuyu, or killed part of my lawn. However, eventually I did find a way. Firstly I bought Freezone Tuffweed, which contains a higher concentration of glyphosate than Roundup, which costs less and you only need a smaller quantity. I purchased a Weeding Brush, several different makes available, filled it with Tuffweed, and went onto the lawn, choosing an area to treat, and began stroking the brush along every Kikuyu runner I could see. As you push on the brush, it allows chemical to flow to the brush head, so you can target where your chemical is going far better than spraying, and you can do it even on a windy day! Once you have done it a few times, you can become quite good, and application gets more precise, so damage to your lawn or other plants becomes negligible. This kills the whole plant as it's systemic, from runner to root. It's the only way I know of killing Kikuyu permanently. Hope this is of benefit Rod.
