Wet bar near kitchen with pass through stuck in 80's
Comments (2)While my kitchen is not yet remodeled, I had a similar wet bar in my family room. The room had a pass through window and bar top which opened into the family room. I closed off the window completely and have turned the room into a large pantry/storage room. I re-routed the plumbing to make a wet bar on the outside, though we have not yet built the wet bar. (We want to do it with the kitchen to have matching cabinetry.) I am much happier with the function of the room as I found the wet bar room essentially useless. At this time, I have an antique sideboard against the wall where a wet bar will eventually go, and we use it for glass and liquor storage. I look forward to putting in a wine/beverage fridge. Here is an old thread where I received some advice on getting rid of the wet bar room. I realize you are initially thinking just about updating the room, but for me, the whole concept of a wet bar room with a pass through window was outdated and not so useful with contemporary lifestyles. I would recommend at least considering re-doing and repurposing the room to work for you....See MoreReally need help updating 80s kitchen
Comments (31)This is my personal opinion. I'm no expert about this. I think if the house is a blank slate style-wise, you can take it in almost any direction you prefer. Although you need to have a vision for the entire home to make this work. You don't want to end up with a country kitchen, super-modern baths, and a Craftsman living room. I guess I would start by asking myself if the lines of the home are more horizontal or vertical. Again, my personal opinion, but I think horizontal lines lend themselves better to more sleek styles like modern, MCM, or whatever. Just something more streamlined. While horizontal lines lean more toward traditional, transitional, and country-ish/cottagey styles. What do YOU like? What do you envision for the rest of the home? I'm sure you'll get better, more concrete advice from others. And it may be helpful to post this question in the Home Decorating forum, too. And probably time to start finding inspiration photos....See MoreWhich sink and material for my 80's kitchen?
Comments (12)Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned that my current sink is 8" deep and it fits fine. It's the 9.5" and 10" deep sinks that are pushing it. Also, I am looking at box store type sinks. My entire condo costs what many of the kitchen remodels here cost and I don't want to over-improve it. townlakecakes, I don't know what the valve for the dishwasher is called, but my last place had one and my parents have one, too....See MoreHow do I help take these dining chairs out of the 80's
Comments (8)Someone re-upholstered my parents’ old set, and the loss of the caning is what was heart-breaking. is it the color, seat condition, back shape you don’t like? If it’s the caning, the back frame is glued together, and can come off, if you want to put an upholstered back in (see my photo of the purple beast). I’ve seen a painted version of the same set that looked very nice, too. in my case, I want to sand out the heavy rounded edges on the table & china cabinet at some point....See MoreRelated Professionals
