Friends of ours in Europe just did analglypta paintable wallpaper for their backsplash in their new kitchen. It would give you the opportunity to change things up when you got sick of a colour, but I have to say that the polka dots above get my vote.

@tartanmeup, I went plain with mine due to a busy counter, but they do amazing work. I had mine backpainted in a silver metallic and it looks great, but loved some of the designs, and they were wonderful to work with.

Couple of years ago, I got quotes for digitally printed tempered glass from a local print shop. It was super affordable.

stillpitpat - that green is perfect but I’m afraid it’s a bit traditional for me. It does seem very classic!

Beckysharp - those two tiles are so pretty but slightly more rustic for us, but I poked around that website and I really liked their Kavim range - now to track down a sample or a dealer. The picture you showed of the kitchen with copper is so lovely! I hadn't really considered or greys and that looks great there. Our kitchen is really only open to the dining area. Love that green lowers picture, I thought I had seen every green lower picture online but not that. More samples to order! Thank you!

Emmarene - I actually did consider a contemporary accent tile behind the stove but was afraid I’d get tired of it and it was so expensive. Those are really lovely traditional options.

Jan Moyer - I so appreciate the note about the greens all working together, I had it in my head that they needed to match, but I think you’re right that they just need to work together!

Sue - what an excellent suggestion! I’d considered tempered glass but this opens it up in a huge way. I’m very curious about it.

Daisychain - I’d considered wallpaper too, but not a paintable one, it could be really pretty and there are such nice textures when I googled.

Nosoccermom - those are so neat, especially in the showers! I used to live in NZ and you’re completely right that looking for splashback ideas opens up things on the search - thanks!

I actually was just looking at some of fireclay’s hand painted - their uni mountain and winter mountain. And I think I’ll order some samples of their whites and greens too because the shapes you shared are so neat! Thank you!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Fireclay, but I could not look at that second pic you posted. Is that winter mountain? Wow, that gives me a headache even on my screen.

I'm not into "whimsical" when it is semi-permanently affixed and expensive. I'd keep it classic and go for whimsy and interest in art and other things that can be temporary and are not too expensive. I do love some of those handmade tiles, but they are very, very pricey. Unless I was committed to staying in that house and keeping the kitchen as it is for 20 years, I would not spend that much.

@anglophilia I like the idea of personalizing something. “One wild and precious life” and all that.

@mark_rachel you may be right about that busier tile. I’ll have to see it as a sample and if it doesn’t work, I’ll have a neat trivet!

Moorland Fog Quartz is one of the most whimsical stones I have ever seen. Can you imagine it as your backslash? London Gray Quartz and Calacatta Nuvo are also whimsical, but subtle. These stones can give your kitchen an amazing flow.

Light green and light blue glass tile can look truly dreamy. Marble is also a great choice, always.

After looking at this thread again I thought of Mother of Pearl. I think it would look nice with your colors.

Check out some of the other offerings at Tile Bar. I tried to post more green pictures earlier but they disappeared. Also, like Sue, we did backpainted glass. It's not whimsical, but it makes quite a statement.

So many excellent ideas! @mark_rachel I hadn’t considered pearl at all - I think I thought it was too delicate but that’s doesn’t seem to be the case. I’ve started ordering samples - along with the Fireclay above and some of their color samples, I’m also getting samples pictured here. I’m getting some fish scale and various whites and greens to experiment with pops of color or maybe a subtle ombré look.

I hope I’ll remember to update in a few months with out finished backsplash!
