Hi Lori~ Yes, I'm relieved we got the window grille issue resolved. The grilles everywhere were way too much! I love the six over one-looks clean and classic to me. I checked our window schedule and this is what it reads for the windows you asked about: Triple Double Hung with Transoms (first floor next to door) Size: 2828, 2828, 2828 with 12 inch transoms Double Double Hung (second floor) Size: 2824, 2824 Hopefully that makes sense to you. You could try the change ahead to see if it is going to bother you - maybe cut out a mock-up grill of white construction paper and tape it on the old window and live with it a few days. Or put white tape on the window to look like the grill. It could be that after a few days it just won't even register with you, especially if you plan to put up blinds or drapes. I have recently gone from off-white baseboards and window casings to a soft white; my mini blinds are still off white and although I thought it wouldn't look so good, it really doesn't bother me at all. There are different types of these windows. I have an about sixty-year old Colonial center divided, foyer, dining room to the north, living room to the south and the foyer is open with a curved staircase going up. It would be horrible without the window that is above the door and every window and the door is evenly spaced across the front outside. The window has held the same as the others. It can be dusted with an extension on the inside and washed with windex on the hose on the outside. it lets wonderful light into the house and because of the lace panels I have privacy upstairs on the landing and if it is dirty it is not so noticeable because of the light filtering lace panels. On the other hand, there is a house in my neighborhood that is on the newer side, not colonial, where the architect put a window over the front door for no mathematical reason, it looked odd, and as you drove past you could see every move the family made because it wasn't as high as mine and because it was so low you could see that it was dirty, which I suppose was more noticeable because there was no window covering even ever so light of one. Well, interestingly enough, a few years went by and they took out the window and replaced it with the same wood the house is built of. So Anglophilia is right in one respect...there is a distinctly special place for those windows! My problem is my windows are regular double hung so they match those on the outside and I think the breeze would be lovely upstairs, but I cannot open them because they are too high and I very well can't be carrying an extension ladder in every time I wanted to open and shut them.

Two story high draperies are tricky…oftentimes, they can look out of scale or overly dramatic whether functioning or decorative. If your main objective is to add texture to the center window wall, I think a light, airy, textured, nonfunctioning drapery that covers the entire wall would give you the texture you want and provide some softness that the room needs. Operable blinds or shades would need to be in all of the upper windows, in addition to the lowers, so “black box” windows at night would not show through the draperies. White would be the easiest color to transition to because you already have white side walls and white blinds. Just need to paint the green wall and get shades for the upper windows.
