Comments (57)Well, I'm back .. for punishment or for info either way ... I never received any email updates on this thread so wasn't sure it was getting any attention or updates .. wow my surprise! Where to start .. well, we didn't hire a CG - which was a bit of a mistake in planning our back bathroom and car port area that was converted to a room - but nonetheless we're learning as we go, as many people do in their first reno. I'm not going to get into why this was converted into a room, we didn't do it, but the previous owners did. They had a leak issue in the room so we fixed it last year. This year we decided to take care of the room itself, and had no ideas what we wanted. We added radiant floor heating, raised the ceiling 2 ft (in the room not the bathroom because of joist limitations, ect), and had roughed in plumbing (without really thinking of a pre-fab shower pan or custom tile and custom glass - this was one of our costly mistakes). Not having a CG - or asking questions ahead of time - cost us. But we're happy with what we have. Now onto the work itself ... behind the walls are DensShield with latricrete HYDRO BAN and HYDRO BANî Sheet Membrane taped seams everywhere ... the grouting lines and tiles were vertical at the top because the house isn't square, and in fact neither are the walls. You'll notice in the picture the tiles get larger on the inside of the shower than they do on the outside. My tiler recommended the lay the tiles that way since the top row would then have a small piece which would be larger on one side than the other. A tapered subway tile Vs what you see now wouldn't have looked as good. So I took his advice. The shower pan he built as well and is in fact sloped 1.5" to the drain from where the glass will start (installation next week) - 2" actually to the inside of the drain. Anyway, we're happy with the job with what he had to work with, tile, colors, ect. The room was painted last night and once the toilet, sink and stacker washer/dryer are in, i'll re-post with the finished color and product - no matter how much criticism. Comments (41)I am so grateful for this feedback I have received today. And thank you again PPF and Bryan911 for all the helpful details. I am going to see about a new upper cabinet. We’ve put too much into this project to let two upper cabinets good us up :) I had a lot of people including a designer I hired for a short time out eyes on this, and we still missed it. Just goes to show you how difficult it can be to build a house and get all the details to work out as hoped. PPF — the reason we broke up the expanse of the pantry door with shaker panels was since we wanted it to look integrates with the cabinetry and to break up the tall doors since we have 10’ ceilings. I do agree also about hinges that can be hidden. It also annoys me that they are such a bright gold when my lights and cabinet hardware will be more of an aged, satin brass. Is it easy to switch out hinges and not mess up the doors?...See Moreblack mold in brand new shower
Comments (9)This is my personal property. I am an interior designer, but this is a bathroom at a house that my husband and I recently moved into. This contractor was personally referred to us by my husband's partner, who is meticulious in everthing that he does, and this contractor completed a multi-million dollar renovation for them, although we have found out since then that this was the most expensive renovation that they have completed, and that he sent his least qualified men to complete our job - we suspect because it was so small. (my husband's partner has had absolutely no complaints from this contractor.) I have not discussed this issue with him yet because, quite honestly, I was not sure it was his fault, and, in addition we had several issues previous to this in the bathroom including a leak from this shower down to my foyer ceiling because a nail went through a pipe in the shower, and I'm deciding if I want to involve him in this or bring someone completely new to take a look. Do you have any opinions on the problems that I have brought up?...See MoreNew Build-massive bathroom floor leak
Comments (27)When it comes to wet rooms waterproofing and proper pitch to the drain is essential. Based on our experience wet rooms or showers will get water under tiles trough fissures or any hairline cracks on grout and saturate the base, but will not cause leaks only damages to the setting base or loosen, stain and crack tiles with time. All wet rooms are not water resistant at the joints, they will develop fissures or cracks as the structure settles, topical sealers alone will not prevent water infiltration. We recommend to properly repair the grout as soon as it develops fissures to prevent further damage to the materials, the idea is to make all the moving parts/joints water resistant at which point sealer applications can work more efficiently....See Morejillianfl
