Mandolin for tomatoes? Blender, juicer recommendations?
Comments (3)I have this French mandoline from Lee Valley Tools. It ain't cheap, but is extremely sturdy, and the cutting width is infinitely variable. Keep in mind that it is very difficult with any tool to cut soft tomatoes uniformly thin, but otherwise, this gadget is great for all veggies, and it collapses quite flat for easy storage. Can't help you with a juicer, but my blender is a VitaMix 3600+ which is now over 25 yrs old and quite retro looking. Still love it, and after the passage of that amount of time, I've almost forgotten what I paid for it. Comments (8)We have a breville hemisphere at the lake house. It's normally 199 or so but with a 20% off coupon we purchased for 163 or so at Bed bath and beyond. It works great! I can make smoothies with kale froZen banana and berries- no problem. It even blends raw nuts into the drinks. Very happy with the purchase. We also make a lot of frozen drinks at the lake house--- a year later still going strong. At our house we have vitamix. The breville isn't quite as good but it's also 1/3 or 1/4 the price! I personally like the breville better than my mom's blendtec....See MoreStick blender recommendations?
Comments (17)I also have the original Braun that came out in the early to mid 80's. It still works well though it is sometimes hard to clean under the blade surround. I like it because it's not too big. OTOH a year or so ago I saw KA ones clearing out at WalMart extremely cheap so I bought two. One for me and one for SIL. I didn't like it, it was like wielding a baseball bat and it had a speed dial on top which I didn't think was necessary. The only good point was you could remove the stem to wash separately. SIL likes hers and I gave mine to my sister. The little Braun is much more practical and easier to use. Sometimes simpler is better....See MoreRecommendations for non-fancy immersion blender
Comments (17)I don't trust bad reviews that much. Given that fact that users with good experience don't write good reviews as often as users with bad experience writing bad reviews. If blender X sells at $30 each, they can sell 100,000 units there will be many bad ones proportional to 100,000 units. If the same blender X is sold at $ 150 each, they can only sell 1000 units, there will be many fewer bad ones sold and fewer bad reviews. Same identical blender. Whoever sells blender X at $150 each will be very happy to send you free replacements and get good reviews for good customer service. I bought a hand blender for $35. 300 Watts of power with 23,000 RPM speed. I refuse to pay $200 for a Bamix at 150 Watts of power with 14,000 RPM speed. dcarch...See Moreplllog
