How Undertones Affect Paint-Color Results
Comments (14)Glad you found something useful to take away from the article, kiki. This is the perfect place to ask questions. That's what the forum is all about. :D Is it easier to figure out what th undertone is by looking at the paint formula or something? No. Parts is parts. The individual colorants combined to make a paint color mean nothing individually. You have to mix two colors together to see what you get. It's a like a new recipe. Experienced cooks can make a dish that is new to them and have darn good idea what it's going to taste like. Their experience has built a knowledge base that allows them to predict what will happen when they combine ingredients. But, can they truly know what it tastes like until the dish is completed and they can actually take a bite? No. They can only make their best guess about how it's going to come out. Repetitively working with the same ingredients -- or in this case colorants or paints -- builds experience. It's experience mixing colors using familiar components that accounts for a limited ability to predict what will happen when you mix two or more paints/colorants. Even with a solid grasp of basic color theory and experience mixing colors, you don't know for sure what you're gonna get till you mix the color, let it dry, and look at it. If there was some magic to be found in studying paint color formulas, then all the paint mixing people would never make a mistake. Every can would come out exactly as they predicted based on what they know about their colorants. The reality is even though they mix paint colors using the same colorants day in and day "ooops" paint still happens. The average person who buys paint does not have the experience of working with the individual colorants or the advantage of knowing intimately the complex details of the colorants in order to make a decent prediction about what the result of combining colorants will look like. They are better off not cluttering up an already confusing process (choosing paint colors) with pedantic information that they can't effectively apply. Anyone can learn how to mix colors if they want to put the time into learning and experimenting. But like I said, the average person buying paint isn't looking for a new hobby and just wants to get their painting project done. And do you know of any sites where you can practice figuring out undertones? I don't know of any online resources where you can experiment with undertones. If they do exist, I'm not confident they would work very well. I can explain. Color on a monitor is additive color. Mixing paints is subtractive. An immense amount of incorrect information is out there on the web about color mixing. The most common error I see is authors/experts confusing additive and subtractive color. Online exercises specifically for undertone would be pointless because your monitor (which is additive color) is limited by how it can simulate paint colors (which are subtractive). The fine details and nuances of a paint color's undertone, that dimension of color, is lost in the translation from subtractive paint color to additive color on your monitor. I have to run but will get back to you re: gray....See MoreWhat paint undertone do you see?
Comments (13)I agree with cpartist and others. Very helpful examples too. I, personally, see blue undertone on the first pic, purple on the second and third, and green on the fourth.. First, monitors. No accurate representation Unless it's a professional photoshoot with special umbrellas and stuff..or somebody extremely talented in photography that is very knowledgeable at how to work with the light present. (I saw one person like this. So I know they exist. But it was her profession) Second-color changes like crazy. Same room even-different light, different angle, different shadow, different colors around Good at least you both see gray Because our backdoor entrance is a shade of green and my husband says it's purple..)))))...See MorePlease help. Comments (7)Will your paint guy guarantee to-your-satisfaction coverage with one coat if you upgrade? Thought not ;-) Now,given that the two shades are so close,it is conceivable that one more coat will satisfy your discerning eye. But honestly, ime, not likely. This is more about how paint/pigment and light works than it is about marginally better paint. Couple questions...were the walls primed? How much do you think the light sources in the space will change it? Remember that drapes, lamps, light bulbs, furniture, and floors all make huge differences...to say nothing of that pesky old sun and don't get me started on the moon. edit to add- given the cost of labor, always spring for better paint but not just because of "coverage" (although it usually covers better) but because of adherence, workabilty, and longevity....See MoreSherwin Williams Paint help
Comments (24)There is a paint shortage and it is an issue for many areas, there are pockets where it is less of an issue. It’s also certain paints. As the OP pointed out she had to go up a level on paint quality. Last month I couldn’t get samples at SW, but took the card to The DIY store and they made it up for me. Because I was using a higher grade paint, I had no problem getting the gallons I needed. I however listened to those in the trade there getting their paint talk about the shortages and what they have had to do to get paint. Google for the headlines. It’s a raw materials issue, the big freeze in TX is part of the problem. For some areas that had a greater supply on hand and less demand haven’t had to turn away sales or up sell/downgrade, yet. We are buying paint both in FL and WI and my husband proclaimed there was no paint shortage in WI, I insisted he buy up the paint anyway and what do you know, 3 weeks after me telling him it was an issue he let me know they were out of the cashmere we buy. In all seriousness, this has been an issue since end of March/Early April for many areas. Plenty of news articles in the last 2 days. To the OP, if you have Nextdoor app maybe make a plea to see if anyone has the colors you are interested in and maybe they would give you a little bit of theirs? Worst case if HD is out of samples, bite the bullet for a quart and have them make it up for you from SW....See Moredelfgill
