Supermarkets are so enormous. They put essentials in all four corners so you have to walk around the whole store. I often don't have it in me. We have a small, family owned grocery not far from our house. They have just about anything I need including a butcher counter, store made quiche, shepherd's and chicken pot pies. Would be expensive to buy household products there, but when I'm not up to the supermarket I can get in and out of the smaller grocery without too much exhaustion.

It's a great service especially when you need that little bit of extra help!

It is nice that grocery stores now offer home delivery. As the population ages the service is needed. Our Auld's even now offers home delivery.

When I read about grocery delivery I remember the old westerns my husband watched. I am not to the stage that have problems with walking. Doing delivery may make a return to a modern day grocery counter where everything is kept behind shelves. I enjoyed visiting grocery and other stores when I used to travel on days that the weather was nasty. I would hate to see not being able to see different products that are available. Delivery most would never think of alternates to what is on their lists and miss interesting things. An example is the flavored tuna that has been appearing in online ads. Not something that I would like but a new type of cookie or a fresh veggie I had never seen before, Yes.

Costco delivers my groceries and I love that service since I no longer drive. When I first considered the idea a couple years ago I was apprehensive that the fruit and vegetables would not come up to my standards, but the delivered items are always flawless. I have had both Costco and HEB deliver, one each delivered my groceries to the wrong apartment one time each, and once notified were very helpful.

I hope the walking issues resolve very soon.

I don't know if Walmart delivers here, but I have been ordering on line and picking up my groceries for several months. Kroger also does a good pickup, but the store is much further away than Walmart. I have been pleased with the selections and the loading into the car. Sometimes I have a longing to see the produce in the store, but I get over it when I consider that walk into the store.

Home delivery of groceries: Its coming back? During the rationing days of WW2, a few country grocery stores ran a '"huckster" truck. This was a mini-convenience store on wheels that made the rounds to farm houses. It ran 2 days a week on Tuesday and Thursday. If it did not have what the farm wife needed, it could be ordered on Tuesday to arrive on Thursday. The era of huckster trucks was short lived.

My dad owned the local grocery store, when I was young. Known for his fresh meats.

He also did home delivery. Ralph was his delivery boy, I thought he was so cute. :o)

This was before the grocery chains began. I remember when Krogers opened, the first food chain, right up the street from dad's store.

Glenda, I'm sorry you're having problems walking, but it's good to know the grocery delivery system works well! I don't know if our Walmart has online grocery shopping and delivery or not, nor do I know if our HEB delivers, but they do have the curbside pick up. I've seen the 'shoppers' with their lists and rolling shelf racks, but I've never seen them in the produce department. I can't help but wonder how carefully they chose fresh produce for customers. Did you order any fresh produce? Did they chose well for you? Just curious.

The only perishable item I bought was a doz eggs for 88 cents. They were the first things I checked and they were perfect.

I do see fresh produce you can add to the cart, and I'm sure they will be selective in their choice.

Only one substitution and that was fish oil capsules, different brand, same amt/price.

The delivery people are not WM related. They are a company of its own. Precious young lady delivered and put bags in the kitchen for me.

Could not decide whether to tip or not as I was paying the $9.95 delivery fee. But after they left email from WM asking if I would like to tip the driver and they gave me suggested amounts, which I did.

I definitely will order again.

I hope that person got the tip. I would keep some cash on hand and give them that if you are so inclined.

Tip was according to the total amt of purchase. Started at 3 and up or you could choose your amt.

They did specify it would go to the driver and sent me a receipt.

I always tip $10 for grocery delivery since it's a luxury service for me. I use Amazon fresh and it's $9.99 a month with free delivery over $50. I've been very happy with them and even had a free $200+ Thanksgiving when they made a mistake with my order!

A friend of mind orders from Walmart and if they don't have the product you want they upgrade and give you more or better. Good deal!

Valuable service to have. I don't know if it's done around here yet. I know you can order online and pick up, not sure about delivery. I wonder if they have a delivery radius. We live between two towns, each has a Walmart. One is about 15 miles away, the other is 20.

Yes, online grocery and delivery shopping is a godsend. When my MIL lived alone more than 200 miles away and could no longer shop for herself, I ordered from her local Shop-Rite. The shoppers and deliveryman are saints in my book. The shopper always called about substituting an item and the deliveryman was patient and persistent. Many many times, my MIL could not hear the bell to open the door to her building. When this occurred, he called me, then I called her to tell her to open the door. This could go on and on with several attempts. Never once did the deliveryman give up. I am sure she never tipped him. I called the home shopping division at the store to commend and thank them.

Jemdandy, I vaguely remember a truck like you describe -- seems it had "notions" like sewing needles, or could sharpen a knife -- from when I was very young. We were living in a semi rural area then, our house was the old farmhouse but the farm had been subdivided to houses.

Or maybe I just read about such a thing and never actually experienced it.

My great grandfather, way back in the early 1900s, was a "peddler" who had a route with his wagon and horses around outside of Detroit, delivering foodstuffs and sundries, sometime in barter for fruits and vegetables.

I know this is one of those weird ghost threads but thought I would tell my story anyway.

I just ordered online and picked up my groceries from the real Canadian Superstore.

It only cost me $3 plus my gas there and back to have them do the shopping.

I had to go in and exchange one thing and there were a couple of substitutes. Next time I'll say no to the substitutes as the chicken that they substituted was too high of a price.

So all-in-all a fairly good experience. We are much farther away from the grocery store than we were before.
