the taxes are done...let’s start on the dining room!

Not that I’m getting any tax money back, but the paper is off the table. I’ve tried to do this room in the past, but this time I’m really committed. I desperately need to change the lighting in this room and the adjoining entryway. Here’s what I’d like help with:
1) The sconces are mounted too high and I’d prefer to find some where the light fixture extends downward from the electrical box rather than tear up the plaster walls too much.
2)The chandelier, originally, had a big drum shade, but I removed it. All you saw from the entry was the shade, so I think a more open light is needed.
3)The furniture stays, sorry. I have been wanting to paint the buffet but am stuck on color.
4)Open to painting the room, and my husband has agreed he will change the wainscoting to some that is not so formal, maybe 2/3 up the wall? Still tentative on that.
5) I’ve taken all the decor out of the room so it’s a clean slate.
6) I am definitely not a crystal, glam gal, so please don’t go there. More traditional, but trying not to be so formal. I definitely think the finishes on the new fixtures should be different
7) Dimensions - room is 15’ L by 13’ w, looking from entry. Table is 7’ x 4’, and has three more leaves, which we use a few times a year. Sconces are mounted 66” from floor to bottom, and are 17” long, just FYI.
8) I’ve been looking at the Reed Double Sconce as potential replacements for the sconces. Will try to post the pic.
9) someone once suggested terrariums for either the table or the top of the china cabinet. I love that idea. Other decor ideas welcome, but I think lighting comes first.
10) the entry needs new lighting too. Long story but that light wasn’t originally bought for there, just ended up there to get a CO, and never changed!

Comments (41)We've been in this house for 26 years and the original kitchen was small and poorly designed with 6 - yep that's right 6 doors or hallway openings. When the 5 of us sat down for meals only the 2 on the end could get up. So we ate in the dining room most nights on a plywood table that DH made until we renovated. Both of us cook and we enjoy having guests so we put on a large addition and at 30 x 18 my kitchen is the largest room in the house and we love it. It mimics our formal dining room with dark cherry cabinets and Oriental rugs on the ceramic. We usually have all our meals there. We've made lighting the candles and saying grace (or a few woods to mark the day's events) a ritual.But there's still nothing like sitting down as a family for meals in the dining room which now has a real table and china cabinet and using the silver and china. There's a different feeling to using the dining room that makes it special. Comments (150)Well this thread has almost reached its end. I think that dianalo and lax have so many good points. Lots of others also but I can't go back again and make note of all of them. For the most part the parents are trying so hard and are doing the best they know how. I don't know how anyone can ask or want more. I made a point of saying we ate dinner together every night. We did. And that it didn't matter where you ate together ...in a tent or where ever. We talked and laughed and cried and sometimes I yelled and stormed at the kids too. It was not all perfect and rose colored. My DH and I did the best we knew how given the patterns we grew up with .I think we did a great job. Our kids are well into adult-hood now. They have a range of behaviors that are full spectrum from in/out of jail and mental illness to productive well-adjusted employed to alcoholic to sweetest and kindest to most self-centered impossible out of control anger...this is the same person...all in this one family...it is also parts of the other 2 children. We all ate at the same table and loved and learned together. All of the children have told us in recent weeks how much we mean to them and how much they love us...while one or another was exhibiting the above behaviors in the past months . As parents there is simply no job that is harder or more heartbreaking or more rewarding. Most of us try to do our best. We ate together and I am the first to admit that sometimes we would have been better off being in separate rooms. So be it. We did the best we could and the kids know this. I know this...I still feel guilty every day for the times that I made big mistakes. I am trying to let that guilt go. But when the phone rings in the middle of the night...it all comes back. This started as a conversation about the DR. Yes we have had one since 1979. Has it made a difference in my life or DH's or our children's ? No. Has the time we have spent with them reading stories in their room ? Yes...more than any other time ever ever spent they still all talk about the books that we read them. Comparing your property tax bill to your next door neighbor's, in jurisdictions not having the adjustment ceiling California has, value would normally be the ONLY difference contributing to different tax bills. Maybe it's just semantics. The tax number (again ignoring special or per lot assessments) is the product of two numbers, the rate and the value the rate is imposed on. Size of house and lot, its condition, improvements, amenities, recent comparable sales, etc., all affect value but only value affects the tax. The peripheral facts, measurements, etc., are indicia of value in the absence of better information, or sometimes are reasons justifying value. But value is value, it's subjective in any event except in the cases of recent sales transactions for "identical" properties nearby. 5 years agoI would put a mirror or large army betwwn the sconces. I would get the dimensions from Ballard and using blue tape simulate it on the wall. If the curry fixture is too big how about this one

5 years agoGrover, my husband thanks you for your opinion on the wainscoting:) I will wait on that decision until other things are done. During the night (you know, when you wake up with those aha moments), I have also decided to wait on changing the paint color, but if I do, likely to something like revere pewter, a darker version of what is there now..unless someone wants to talk me into something else. I liked the Ballard wall sconce but looked it up and it is bigger than I want...39”! I’ll look for something similar in idea but smaller. I am still looking at the currey fixture as I think it’s perfect, but also may be too big. When I do the size calcs off my table (4’ wide), my chandy should be 24-36” diameter. When I use the room dimension (15’x13’), it should only be 28”. The height should be 22-1/2” to 27” (9’ ceiling). The currey is 35” diameter and 28” high. Too big?
Finally, I dug out the picture I mentioned, but I don’t think it works, 35” and square. Opinions on fixture and picture most welcomed!

5 years agoI don't think you need to follow the rules here on size of chandelier. I like the Currey&Co fixture precisely because it is wider than expected and at the same time a bit delicate.
Your art would work if you reframed and matted it. I show it below with the lower wainscot and a wall that's a darker version of the current color.
Oh yeah, and the buffet painted orange.

5 years agoSorry I’ve been quiet, I’m babysitting for the grands this week (so lucky I can do this) and it has limited my ability to make forward progress. I have found some sconces that may work with the currey chandy, as well as a foyer fixture, and would appreciate opinions. Today I was able talk with a young woman in a lighting store nearby and she helped me. She’s a fan of the currey also! I can’t locate either fixture on houzz, altho I’m sure it’s me. So, sadly, I’m posting links instead. The sconces would be the aged iron finish and the entry would be in the gilded iron finish so it stands out a bit from the black doors in that area.

5 years agoNgcurt, I looked back at your original photo and realize that one reason the sconces look too high is because your mirror is too small and thus they dwarf it. Before you change the lighting, why don't you change the mirror and see what you think about the proportions? Even just tape a big piece of paper to the wall to see if a large piece of art might be enough to correct the balance.
