Bathroom remodel estimate--am I missing something?
Comments (11)I'm just finishing a project where I acted as my own GC. Here are some things you might be missing: 1. Cost of the shower faucets (this can really add up - especially if you want a design where you are using an in-wall diverter to switch between the shower heads and handheld). 2. You mention $350 materials cost - is that for the sink faucets? If so, that might not be enough for 2 8" spread faucets. 3. New base/door/window trim. My house was built within a year of yours and my trim DEFINITELY needed replacing or at least some serious TLC. 4. How about the plumber & electrician - is this included? It sounds like there could be significant plumbing changes. Also, with my project, the plumbing vents ran up the wall we were removing so they had to be re-routed to another wall and up through the roof. This was not known until the demo started. 5. What about all your lighting fixtures? 6. You mention twin doors to the closet - do you need to purchase new doors? My house was luckily built with solid wood doors - nowdays solid doors aren't cheap. Make sure they will use materials that are at least as high quality as what is in the rest of your house. When I built an addition a few years ago - they wanted to put in cheapie hollow core doors - that just didn't fly. This estimate seems way too low, especially since you are moving walls. I would get the bid itemized with exact allowances for fixtures and exactly what is included and not included. For example, my contractor discovered my floor had a big lump in it when he took out the carpet - he's an awesome guy and didn't charge me to fix it but it was a ton of work - I wouldn't count on your contractor being generous when things like this come up. Good Luck....See MoreDishwasher Tabs--am I missing something?
Comments (13)There are very few DW detergents that don't smell like bleach and/or fragrance. Method Smarty tabs are one of the few. That's my number-1 requirement. That they're tabs is not important to me; if the same no-bleach no-fragrance detergent were offered in a powder form, I'd buy that too. I do find that just the 1/2 tab works great in my Miele unless dinner has been unusually greasy or stuck-on. There are so many reports of dishes/glasses etching, and I believe it's cause people use too much detergent in their DWs (and that people rinse before DWing). The Method Smarty tabs are easy to break in half (which halves the price overall too), and I don't have to mess with a powder or gel, just plop in the 1/2 tab in the dispenser....See MoreAir filtration/cleaning.... am I missing something?
Comments (3)System is currently in basement (partially finished). now there is just an open slot and I slide in the filter, obviously not air tight...but doesn't seem to be bad. Of course I know that will get worse the bigger the slot, but figured it was worth a shot....and maybe I could just use some tape or fashion a door of sorts. ...and if I mess up too bad, I can just buy the "cabinet" from AprilAire or Honeywell (mentioned above) Hhhhmmm, I just thought of something though. My current filter size is 14X20X1. So far most of what I am seeing is 16X or more.
