Year in review: A winner, surprise and...Meh.
Comments (11)AC, I too have Schonste. Boy, is that a rose or what???? Move it while you can! : ) Seriously, it's unstoppable and with those prickles and the fact that it is a once bloomer, it has been banished to the back of the garden. It's beautiful though. Surprises for me have been lots of Austins I've tried this season. Pleasant surprises. I'd always purchased them own root and they've been so slow to grow and I'm getting older…..on rootstock they are amazing. Grace, Tamora, Pat Austin, Anne Boleyn, Charles Darwin, Jubilee Celebration, Princess Alexandra of Kent, Princess Anne…they are all fantastic and healthy enough here in my no spray garden. The most beautiful of all is his The Lark Ascending….almost continuous beautiful, gossamer blooms. Another wonderful surprise has been finding a love for vintage HTs…The Doctor, Radiance, Betty Uprichard, Irish Fireflame, Irish Elegance, Bonnie Jean, Betty….I love these roses so much. The blooms blow quickly but the repeat is some of the best! The meh? The same old disease ridden modern HTs that I think I can grow no spray. Nope. Complicata and some of the gallicas just don't thrive here. Didn't do much and then looked nasty all summer… I wish you a long and bloom filled Indian Summer and hope frost will stay away! Comments (13)x, thanks for the feedback on shriveling. Your pic is an excellent data point for me as to how far mesembs can be allowed to dry out without issues. We had a couple of small snow storms up here, so far, that dropped about a foot of snow total. The first one started off right near freezing before dropping to -5F, so a layer of ice built up on the roof. When that happens, even though it is a metal roof, the snow and ice build up, until things warm up a bit and then everything releases in a big whoosh! really sounds like a freight train coming off the roof. Here are a few pics. Looking at the deck. All my plants will be lined up against that wall come summer. That's almost all ice and weighs a couple hundred pounds. You can see how far away from the house it flew. This is why I don't remove snow from the deck, until everything is down - these things release without warning. I don't know from experience, but suspect it would hurt a lot to have it land on me. Another view. That's my drive on the left. Off in the distance you can see the Connecticut River and on the other side the Socialist Republic of Vermont....See MoreIs PRISTIVA additive Good, Bad, or Meh?
Comments (2)Until they say what X2O is, I won't use it. If I don't know what I am putting in a pool, I open myself to potential issues. NaCl is NaCl. Whether it comes from a mine in Utah, Africa, or Nova Scotia. The size of the crystal and current TDS dictates the dissolve rate. Aqua Salt and Morton's work just fine and cost significantly less. Proper pool chemistry maximizes cell life. Scott...See MoreEZ Level - Good, Bad, or Ugly
Comments (20)@Frank Gusto You turned one of the 5s into a zero and called the wrong number. Wait until they open again on Monday and call 800-726-5550. If you can put EZ-Levels on both sides of the diagonal support, I would use two to help bear the weight of that large cabinet. You may need to stagger them to put them on the same board but opposite sides. Since I commented earlier on this thread, my cabinets arrived and were installed with EZ-Levelers, and the whole process couldn't have been easier. The countertop installer was highly impressed with how level the cabinets were all around. Another benefit is that EZ-Levels lift the cabinets about 1/8 inch above the floor, so if there is ever any moisture on the floor, the cabinets won't absorb it unless it is a veritable flood. That also means that you need to take into account the final height of your cabinetry minus about a half inch for the EZ-Levelers and their leveling requirements if you are doing custom countertop heights like I did. It is probably mentioned earlier in this thread another great benefit of EZ-Levels, that they will keep the cabinets stable for longer than regular shims which can tend to work their way out over time, jeopardizing the stability of the countertop if it is a stone countertop. EZ-Level is really the way to go. The units are obviously more expensive than regular shims, so people with flip homes or trying to do things on the cheap are not going to order them, but if you really want to do a great job, get EZ-Levels....See MoreDawnInCal
