Comments (8)Never seen a CC (Schlumbergera x buckleyii) for sale. For some reason this year, EC's are at BBS's, readily available nationwide. Very cool! By CC, do you mean TC (Schlumbergera truncata - that stores sell 'en masse' during the holidays?) Since they are sold with labels that say "Christmas cactus," it would be natural to call them that, and one really needs the botanical name for comparing these plants. I've had an EC for about 2 years and it has bloomed numerous times, both while outside and inside, which I'm told isn't uncommon. OTOH, going by what I've read in anecdotes on these forums, since I just managed to get a cutting of CC via trade less than a year ago, would rarely bloom more than once per year. For that reason, I'd choose EC, but - why not get both and pot together if space is an issue? However, the link I've included below says TC and CC are supposed to bloom twice per year. Rare is a discussion about that happening, maybe because most peoples' plants need to come inside to much less light, IDK. I couldn't possibly choose between TC and EC, you shouldn't either. Although they are called cacti, know all 3 of these are epiphytic jungle plants, and really don't like bone-drying or baking in intense mid-day sun at all. So... you need 3 plants... Comments (10)if my cactus looked anywhere near like the final pic- I'd be thrilled Josh mentioned good and easy to find materials that will also work for your EC in re-hab phases.. Work slowly and careful while trying to FREE (find and keep as much root as you can from the soil they're in now. Roots are very thread like thin and just as flexible if found in good length. I don't think removing ALL the compacted soil wold be an ideal goal this re-pot don't worry if you cant remove it all aim to free as much root as you can with minimal damage to the plant and roots. Soaking the big box store orchid bark will also help you to break it into smaller sized pieces aim for 1/4 - 1/2 inch they also have some orchid bark with a fair amount of better sized perlite in it too. ( I close my eyes and cringe but LOL) A pinch of AV Soil suggested is a fair compromise. Keep the pot size as small as you can ( less is more in this case ) When you see exposed roots they would need and like a little wiggle room not to tight inside the pot nor to deep An AV pot is 4x4 use one if roots would fit but not become overly pot bound because roots do need to breath You'll see when and should know when its time to re size the pot and repot again to 2 inches bigger round ( and maybe more depth for rehab pot 2) Either way at second re potting removing left behind older compacted which should be a bit easier. ETA of a second re-pot depends on your cultivating practices if a few roots are growing out from bottom then it's time I think third repot should be last pot YOU may need Just in case: If it don't flower don't worry it may need to grow for a year or more flowers will eventually happen...See MoreProblems with Easter Cacti and Christmas Cactus
Comments (16)Yikes ... EC watering problems again. Watering holiday cati in general Bi weekly water while it's showing new growth. Reduced amounts and longer timing between watering when in bud.wer Amounts of water can vary depending on where it is ( inside, outside, temps, climate etc.. )EC It's temperamental in so many ways I don't like moving this plant from place to place at all I don't like to suggest moving EC to anyone, hmmm but if not in the right place it doesn't like to flower as good as it can in another area. Wrinkling leaves on an EC. In a way it's your lucky plant usually if over watered EC tend to just drop off (shedding) your right on the wait until it dries out a bit if EC cati gets to dry it also tends to shed it's leaves as well. EC Potting: Different soils for different folks in a sense. Mine, a ceramic pot with a built on exterior watering at bottom. I use a more costume mix of the basic 5-1-1 (RE: in different question). Soil I use small sized orchard bark 5 parts ( Repti bark more pricy but is also good) 1 part turface ( or all sport) 1 part perlite is good, better a more porous more stable pumice 1/2 part shredded leaf debris. Yes in a way the basic 5-1-1 would work rinse and shift or sift then rinse allow to damp dry before re-potting. Like many others I like my jungle cacti roots to have more air. Ohhh I mentioned a bottom water reservoir. For EC. Of all holiday cati I have for EC ONLY I don't habit top watering as it is now the soil mix media allows the reservoir if full of water to be fully absorbed into the pot in an hour or less....See More- 5 years agolast modified: 5 years ago
