moving from NY zone 5/6 to NC zone 8
Comments (9)girlsrulerj: WELCOME! I have been here in NC for 7 yrs now and can help you get started. I live near Winston-Salem. Where are you moving to??? Please fill out your member page to say where you will be located AND to enable direct emails. Your member page is not set up for anyone to contact you at this time. Perhaps once you are settled here, we can all email you with suggestions later, especially those near where you are planning to settle. You will love it here, I promise. I am from Hackensack, NJ via NYC and Boston, so can really clue you in on the differences in growing climates. It is a very happy gardeners paradise here in NC where we really stretch the seasons. Please join us for our twice yearly plant swaps. They are incredible, posted at the Carolina Exchange link from this page. The next one is in September. You are about to see how many flowers bloom in January. What? Yes! It is true. I have plenty to share. Email me. Welcome! Here is a link that might be useful: trade list...See MoreHow early in zone 5 can I divide daylilies
Comments (2)Just make sure your ground is workable, as Rita said. I would love to divide and relocate many daylilies right now, in my Z5, but our ground is much too soggy. Also, there is a snow shower forcasted for tomorrow. Watch your long range weather forcast if you can, for any unusual freeze warnings. Daylilys are tough, though, and even if the tips of the foliage are frost bitten, the lower leaves and crown will survive. Julie...See Morei have scapes!! zone 5
Comments (11)Thanks all, I know I was stunned when I saw the scapes, but it is so encouraging. Funny how just an emerging flower stem can cause so much excitement.!! I think Bowie is willing to share the bench, they did spend some time together on it, but of course Whiskey jumped off when I tried to take that picture. Val, that daff that Whiskey is smelling, (actually he was trying to take a bite of it) is Fragrant Rose, and they were especially pretty and long lasting this year. They have been in bloom for an entire month now. I think the cooler weather kept them hanging on, plus the pink color stayed, it usually fades out in any heat. I also have just lots of buds on my dwarf iris, I just starting adding them and love them too!!!This is most likely time for them to be budding....See MoreZone 5 Daylily Beds
Comments (9)Aloha, Daylilies in my Cottage garden has been a learning process for the last 3 years. You can't do better then to learn from the folks on this forum. You can go back through the many posts to see the many fabulous faces of Daylilies. The more you look the more you will define and refine your taste. The other considerations is the bloom times. You want a selection of early, mid-season and late bloomers to extend the show. If budget is a consideration as it is for me, don't loose heart. There are so many in the $5 to $20 range, usually older varieties that can fit any color theme or loved form. There is no reason to have anyone less then ones you've fallen in love with. Floota's garden as shown in her generous photos above is a stunning blue print for what is possible.I am so excited for you, as you start this adventure of discovery. Along with this forum, a tool that is invaluable is Tinker's Garden Daylily Database. Bookmark it. You can do a search on any named Daylily for it's stats and photos as seen in gardens. You will notice that the color and form of a particular daylily may vary between the 3 photos shown. This is due to different growing conditions and the time of day the photo was taken. I cross reference the photos seen on nursery sites with Tinkers to see what is consistent, and then take it with a grain of salt. lol. The photos and descriptions posted by this forums members from those with MY same zone are what I trust the most. If you can do a day journey to a daylily farm/nursery, do. Nothing like seeing them in-person. Make sure you use the search feature on this forum to see old posts on particular areas of your interest. For example- " favorite Corals" "True Pinks" "Late bloomers" Companion plants etc.etc....Good luck, enjoy!...See Moresherrygirl zone5 N il
