Roses For A New Day -- Fires Can't Stop A Rose Gardener
Comments (9)I was asleep when the reverse 911 call came in. I knew we had Santa Ana conditions and a fire was way, way up in the mountains. Never imagined it would come to this ... Nearly 1 million Californians displaced. I woke up the kids and called my husband who was working late to come and get us! We left at 2 a.m Monday and saw the flames advancing over the ridge. After 5 days with just the clothes on our backs and the 5 of us living pretty much out of our van 100 miles north, we're back in Escondido today and thankful our home was spared. Many of our neighbors were not so fortunate and it's difficult to see all the charred foundations where houses once stood. I drove up the mountain to check on some of our kids' schoolmates and after much confusion mixed with some denial, I realized I couldn't find or see their homes because . . . well, the homes were not there anymore! The schools are getting lists together of kids whose homes burned to the ground. It is so sad. The firefighters who saved our neighborhood commented that we were extremely fortunate since there were walls of flames almost 360 degrees around us. Our kittens are safe but scared and weak. I gave them baths, cleaned out their eyes, ears and noses which were filled with soot. We have lots of ash and some came into the house through the door jams. We will be cleaning all weekend and for weeks to come. I lost some of my rare roses (from the wind, 99 degree heat and not being there to water them) Fatalities were Burgundy Iceberg, Julia's Rose, Spellcaster, Ruby Pendant and others. But I have NOTHING to complain about ... we got out and our kids have a home to come back to .... just a whole lot of cleaning up to do. Very Thankful, Denise...See MoreAre there some roses deer like less/more than others?
Comments (28)rosy, I started out with netting for all the reasons given above. I already had a split rail fence and just planted the posts to line up with it. My situation may have been different because they habitually used my secluded "back forty" to sleep and have their babies. It wasn't a problem until I actually wanted to clear it out and plant things down there. I didn't use the bags with the netting as I wanted it to be invisible. Well, it was invisible to the deer as well as they just jumped right through it. Then I put up metal fencing which they also jumped through breaking all my wooden posts. So I put up a double metal fence with the bags. Sorry if they're not aesthetically pleasing, but I know they worked on preventing them coming onto my upper lever last year before I invested in the water scarecrow and finally put up a decorative fence there.. Anyway, I couldn't face having to replace the wooden posts a THIRD time. Of course, they found the three areas I didn't think they could get to, so they now have metal fencing. You may not have these issues because they haven't discovered your house yet. A hedge also works. I have that where my fence is only 6" high and they won't breach it as they can't jump high AND wide....See MoreRoses you like enough to have more than one
Comments (39)The place I have the most multiples of roses is in front of my house where it's a virtual zone 4 (so I need really hardy roses) and my husband wants a relatively tidy and uniform look. So there I have: Sweet Fragrance X6 (love this rose) plus another one in the back yard Calypso X 4 Music Box X 3 OSO Easy Mango Salsa X 2 Alba Meidiland X 2 Lavaglut X 2 or 3 Mango Veranda X 2 Elsewhere, I have intentionally bought duplicates of the following: Soul Sister X 3 Campfire X 3 Francis Dubreuil X 2 Liverpool Remembers X 2 Sunny Knockout X 2 Caldwell Pink X 3 The Grayson Rose X 2 All the Rage X 2 Screaming Neon Red X 2 Golden Zest X 2 Laguna X 2 I also have some inadvertent doubles from mistakes in orders, free roses, or other such occurrences, with multiples of the following: Robin Hood X 3 Queen of Sweden X 2 The Alnwick Rose X 2 Blue Girl X 2 Delany Sisters X 2 Sophisticate X 2 Winnipeg Parks X 2 That's all I can think of off the top of my head but I'm sure there are others. Mostly I'm a collector and would rather closely plant three different roses than the same one three times. Cynthia...See MoreMore roses than will fit
