Best non-US old garden rose nurseries?
Comments (8)Many European sources also sell OGRs, whether they specialize in them or offer than in addition to more recent introductions. The Lens Nursery in Belgium, Bierkreek in The Netherlands, 16 eichen in Germany, and quite a few others, also offer OGRs. Most will ship to the US, but it is NOT worth the hassle and expense of the import permit and governmental restrictions currently in place. Even worse, we can not import ANY plant material from the European Union due to the presence of specific pests. If you're interested in the why of it all, please see the linked thread below. You'll find it all there, including the current specific restrictions against importing in to the US. You can save yourself a great deal of time and effort by either purchasing the Combined Rose List from Peter Schneider, where he lists all the roses available from catalogs which have been submitted to him and references which catalogs they appear in. The list also indicates who ships to the US. The easiest way would be to become a premium member of Help Me Find - Roses and do an Advanced Search for the class types you're interested in. That will show which have been most recently listed by the nurseries, which nurseries listed them, and then provide all pertinent information about the specific nurseries. Have fun! Comments (7)Hi Julie, I think that the best advice I could give is that you decide on how much you can spend on travel (and of course the daylilies you will want to buy when you see them in person!) and then see how far from home you can go. There are display gardens all around the country, but I see only one in Oregon although there are three in Washington. You can look them up on the AHS web site which is http://www.daylilies.org/daylilies.html Then click on Regional ACtivities. You are in Region 8. If your buget allows, there is also something called Daylily Mecca - one in the upper midwest (Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky) and another in Florida where hybridizers' gardens are open over a several day period. I looked briefly and could not find anything about the one in Florida for 2009, but if it is happening, it would likely be in late May or early June. The one in Ohio is in the planning stages. It will likely be a 2 - 4 weeks after the one in Florida. You can see a bunch of gardens in a relatively short time. Info for this is at http://www.northernmecca.com Other than that, if you can find individual growers in your area, or somewhere that you would not mind going to for those three days, nearly all of them will be glad to tell you when their peak bloom season occurs and they will welcome your visit. Besides the National Convention mentioned above, each AHS Region generally has their own annual get together which revolves around garden visits and a lot of good food. I'm in Georgia, and our Regional meeting is the first weekend in June with tours planned for both Saturday and Sunday. Good luck finding what you want. I'm sure that there are other regional meeting closer to you. They should be listed (or will soon be listed) on the AHS web site Larry...See MoreDoes anyone know Rose Nurseries that sell Easy Elegance series Roses
Comments (11)Sorry John I clicked on your profile and saw your location. You lucky devil I typed in one of your zip codes. There are at least 30 nurseries in your area that carry EE rose including Lowes and Menards. Ours never have them and I'm not that far from Chicago. Thats usually where I end up driving. Most likely you will also be able to find Campfire. It's not an EE but a newer intro from Canada. Highly recommend this rose if you like it that is....See MoreChamblee's Rose Nursery....question?
Comments (21)I'm in the landscape industry but it is the same problem across all construction and horticultural fields. NO NEW WORKERS, not for any price, unless they are undocumented, and even those are hard to find and the risks are not worth it. Our landscape installers earn $15-$20 an hour and we can find people who are interested in the job because they like the wages, unfortunately they don't like the work. Wholesale nurseries are closing and there are very few new nurseries coming to take their place. The price of plants is almost criminal , but you can't buy the plants you want elsewhere, so you have to pay. Quality is going down, prices going up. We are growing our own roses and favorite perennials out of necessity, we don't sell to the public, all our plants are used "in house" or given away. We are very concerned that very good varieties may disappear as older nurseries close their doors. It's time to pass it on. Pass along plants, pass along knowledge....See Moreroseseek
