How to tell the difference between canker and deer/other damage?

Hello, some friends of mine asked me to help them with pruning their apple trees.

They have a few 4 and 8 year old trees. Most look great, but some of them that bother me though, so I was hoping to find some advice here.

Am I looking at canker, or deer/sunscald/insects/something else? The owners say that they frequently have problems with deer and thatching ants during the summer. This is in Western WA for context.

Take a look at this album of two of these trees: https://imgur.com/a/CLdTZAU

In these affected areas in the first tree the bark becomes soft, sunken in and easily broken apart. But it appears to start healing over that summer.

As for the second tree... It looks like a hot mess. My instinct is to just cut that down and burn it for safety. It has two Tompkins King trees growing right next to it, which show no signs of any problems at the moment.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!
