How to create a cohesive look - dining & living room?
Comments (49)The plates look super! (And don't worry about "us" being upset! You are following your heart, and only you know your daughter ... we certainly don't!) :-) I love that Kaufmann fabric that Rita shared. That's along the lines of what I was envisioning early on for this space. Fun, fresh, young, a bit bohemian - I think that would really rock!...See MoreKazak rugs/Persian rug - affordable options

Comments (40)When you retell the story of how they came to be yours, it seems that you had more of an option to reject them than you originally related. I suggest that you exercise that option. I had one such sofa for many years that was bequeathed to me via my parents who got it from some antique dealer. It was a real old one with horsehair in the cushions. I even paid to have it reupholstered. I always hated it and finally got rid of it. I tell my kids to just tell me when they don't want something. Actually, I am extremely mindful of passing anything down to them. They have their own stuff. If they want it, they can have it when I am gone. I'll bet that even Queen Ann, herself, would not like these overly ornate and supremely uncomfortable seats. I'll bet that even she would get rid of it and have what she wanted. LOL!! Have the inlaws gone on to a more modern style while leaving their old one for you? That might make some sense if you are just starting off in life, but you seem to indicate that you are not still standing on the starting line. You are not going to get where you want to go via their aesthetics. And, as others have advised, don't build it in....See MoreHow to give a modern look to this room?
Comments (8)I'm being a contrarian here, but leave the wood and fireplace alone for now. Both hamonize beautifully with your gorgeous floors. Have a cabinet finisher remove shelves on left side and put your TV there as Patricia suggests. Sorry, but the current sofa and chairs, and rug, send a 1980's frat vibe to what could be a stunning transitional room. Furniture and rug should be changed, not the fixtures of the room, IMO. Consider getting a warm, camel/butterscotch sectional, one side to face TV, the other to face the outdoors. Get a around modern coffee table and a much larger interesting rug in warm colors. Note the warm colors here that echo floors, wood cabinets, fireplace. This room reminds me of yours--the built-ins, the fireplace, the wood trim. Paint the walls a warm white that brings out the wood. Get some great modern art to put above the fireplace. This palette in a modern abstract would instantly modernize your room. It picks up camel, warm wood tones, stone finishes from fireplace. Rug in modern pattern with camel for future camel sofa: In the above photo, walls are a warm off-white. Note wood trim above doorways. You don't need to paint the trim right now.
