Comments (25)I disagree with hollysprings. The installer generally knows how much overage to allow for edges and pattern, but the people in stores can and do make those calculations too. They haven't seen the space and may allow a bit extra to make sure there isn't something they aren't seeing that would require a bit extra, but 9 boxes is extreme. I have always checked the calculations myself. Stores that are doing the installation (carpet) can be bad about over ordering, and on a 12 foot roll, you pay a lot for the extras. You get nap that doesn't match if they under order. I would make a BBB claim and let them help you try to get your refund, then file with Angie's and any others based on what is or isn't resolved, noting the errors and extreme rudeness. Anything you post doesn't need to be nearly that long -- just that they did the calculation and over ordered the field tile by 9 boxes, ordered the wrong trim, under ordered the grout, charged restocking fees on their over order and wrong order, and were rude beyond belief about it all. Comments (30)Actually the gabled roof looks a lot better than the cut off hipped roof that National One is suggesting. One thing I didn't see mentioned is which direction is north? Your exterior is mixing various styles of architecture with nothing that creates a cohesiveness. I realize how frustrating it is to work on something for a year and then to have it torn apart. It's like telling you that your baby is ugly and not smart. It took me well over a year with help from this forum to get my house to a stage that will really work well. And I do have a design background, but still needed so much help to make it work well. It probably would have been faster and cheaper in the long run if I had let an architect design my house. The problem with internet plans is most of them are fairly generic without really considering how the family really lives. For example, in your home, do you really need 3 eating areas inside the house plus the one I assume you'll have outside? When designing a custom house, everything can work for how you actually live vs how a generic family would live. The fact you're on a couple of acres means you can move the garage from the front of the house, and have the house oriented so it takes best advantage of passive solar heating/cooling. Designing for electronics also needs quite a bit of skill regarding creativity, but it is a heck of a lot different than trying to design a house, which also needs a critical eye for design, layout, flow, etc. Someone who does architectural design will be able to think outside the box, just like you think outside the box when you're doing your work. You trained for years to learn your job, and then have spent years trying to perfect what you do. It's the same with an architect or person of design talent. Please consider taking what you've done and refining it with the help of someone who has the years of training to make it work even better for you. Comments (33)Hi, Your post is great. I am seriously considering using Barker. If I do end up going with RTA, I will definitely measure the height/width of every single cabinet as soon as they arrive. I can start planning the inspection early. :) That means clearing the living room or something. Yes, remodeling = problems. All those remodeling shows on TV make it look fun, but that's fantasy. :) I had bathroom cabinets done. I bought them at a local kitchen showroom that ordered them from a company in another state. They sat in my house (in boxes) for months while other work was completed in the bathroom. The day they were finally installed: 1) The linen closet door was missing; Oops... it was sitting in their warehouse; 2) The installer messed up two doors when he put the handles on; they were crooked. When he straightened them, the original holes were visible (image of me smacking my forehead). They ordered new ones... that took like 6 weeks. When the 2 new doors were delivered, the installer did not bring the linen closet door. I called to remind them of that. The answer was, "Huh? What door?" They searched the warehouse, but could not find it anywhere...and THEN the manufacturer could not find my order to make a new one (it has been too long for me to remember why...), so the local kitchen dealer had to pay a local cabinet maker to make a new door (and it was gorgeous - the finish was slightly nicer than that of the rest of the cabinets). I'd love to know who this local guy is, because I'd hire him. LOL. I only did a vanity and a linen closet, but they were very expensive cabinets, They were built perfectly. That was my first project... many other things went wrong in that bathroom. It put me into the mindset of "problem prevention" with subsequent projects. I try very hard to ask a million questions and take measures to prevent problems, but it's impossible. I don't have a crystal ball. Just about everything I've had done after that has had issues, too... :( The important part, as others have commented, is how the contractor corrects the problem. The only thing I would have done differently today would be: Drive to the kitchen showroom myself on day one and say, "Please give me my door." Still wondering how a door disappeared, and what good it did anyone. :) Did it accidentally end up in the trash? Comments (19)i tried to make a claim on 9/8/20 and they told me that my acct. was suspended since 11/2019... Whaaaaaat. but they took my money out for 12/19 1/20 2/20 3/20 4/20 5/20 6/20 7/20 8/20 9/20. but i couldnt make a claim. but i didnt get any thing saying that something was wrong with my account back in November 2019... so when she told me thta on 9/16/20. i told her this is ridiculous then cancel my account. she couldnt do it fast enough because i said i will sue yall for all those months ... now it took me a while to talk to a supervisor today and he said their is nothing i can do bc you cancelled your account...... i was seeing red ... now i will get an attorney and i will bad mouth them to everyone but that is already going on because they have bad reviews anyway. $559.90.
