Thanks everyone for your kind well wishes. He made it through the surgery fine and saw him afterwards. He was sleepy, but doing OK. They got to it just in time. The intestine was starting to lose color but after they fixed it, the intestine "pinked up right away", to quote the surgeon. He stayed the night and should be able to come home tomorrow.

Here is information on what it was. I never heard of it before, but it can be very serious. "An incarcerated hernia can cut off blood flow to part of your intestine. Strangulationcan lead to the death of the affected bowel tissue. Astrangulated hernia is life-threatening and requires immediate surgery."

Just reading this, so glad to hear that all is well for your son. You just never know what a new day will bring. You and all his loved ones must be so relieved and grateful.

This is the reasoning behind fixing a hernia when it is found. If left alone, it can increase in size and the bowel becomes incarcerated, making it emergent. It sounds like that hernia was there for awhile. Glad your son is doing well. My husband, who should know better, has a hernia that he refuses to get fixed. He stuffed a rolled up sock over it and put on a really tight pair of underwear (actually women's shapewear, don't judge, lol) and it reduced itself. I hope the muscle repaired on it's own, because this was a year ago and he hasn't had any issues with it.

I never thought hernias were a big deal before this happened. It was a wake up call. He is 34 but a very private person and because of his Asperger/Autism, not that tuned into his body. When he is not feeling well, you have to play 20 questions to find out what is wrong. If he hadn't woke up with intense pain he would have continued to ignore it. The pain was the blood supply being cut off to intestine.

We still had to wait in the ER for 5 hours before they did the surgery. They did give him pain meds in an IV. He ended up tossing both breakfast and lunch at 1PM so that cleared him for surgery. I was a wreck, more than him, all day but put up a brave front. You never stop worrying about your child, no matter how old they get.

Oh my after reading of his difficulties with body awareness I am trebly relieved and happy for you!

Thankful, thankful, thankful that it's turning out well - especially in the light of the extra risks involved.

I am glad to hear that the surgery went well and that he's on the mend. The ordeal sounds so scary!

DH went in at 10AM Sunday morning to take him home, but had to wait till he ate solid food, was able to walk on his own and have a BM. And of course had to have the surgeon's OK. The doctor finally came in around 2:30 and said OK, so he could get dressed and go home.

They were impressed about his pain tolerance. It went from a 10 before to a 1 after surgery and that was without pain meds. He is a little sore and tired but doing OK.

DH took off the bandage this morning, as he was told to do, and was surprised that there was no staples or stitches. It was just taped shut. Is that what they are doing now?

I don't know about the no stitches with abdominal surgery but my SIL just had hers done that way. I was surprised too, and in more than one way.

I hope this isn't TMI, and of course I'm not sharing her name but with an alarm from her PC with a physical (no symptoms), she was sent to Seattle Cancer Care and after several tests in a rush of a week, was in surgery. They removed ovaries, tubes, a couple of large fibroids then put her uterus back in place (so bladder wouldn't shift) and didn't take that too. No cancer.

It was a long vertical incision. No visible stitches, all were internal and then tummy steri stripped. They used some kind of infusion of pain med too before closing her up that was supposed to last about 96 hours and it did. I don't think she took any of the narcotic prescription they sent home with her but was fine with tylenol and advil. She had fatigue, little to no discomfort. It's been 6 weeks and she's doing great.
