IKEA boxes and make your own drawer fronts... anyone done this?
Comments (16)remodelfla- Have you considered painting the cabinets and adding in the wood tones in somethings else, like flooring, or butcherblock counters? This is what I am doing with my IKEA kitchen. Perhaps the Scherrs idea is worth checking out though, especially if they are now pre-drilling. I am intrigued to see you design when it is completed- I love the industrial/contemporary/vintage combination that both you and lisalists describe. I have been describing my look as English/Southern/farmhouse/scullery/industrial. grlwprls- I can't wait to see your design either! I love your idea of early American gorcery store industrial. In fact, last summer when I visited a museum in the Outer Banks, I took a picture of their General Store display (I think it was supposed to represent what it would have looked like in about 1910 or so), just for the molding and beadboard! Oh, how pitiful we are, the TKO....See MoreScherrs doors with IKEA boxes?
Comments (21)Just FYI-- for the IKEA pullouts, you have to drill your own holes on the IKEA pullout doors, as they they use the same doors for cabinet uppers, and they are only bored for hinges. The drawer pack apparently has the template. I haven't seen it, yet, as my entire kitchen of flat packs is stacked in my garage. Do a search on ikeafans, as this has been discussed previously. They may even have the templates, but it is easy enough to make your own, using an IKEA drawer. Get an Arlig drawer front, as they are approximately $2. I am bucking the trend and going with a different vendor than Scherr's. They were just a bit too pricey for me, since I want v-groove panels for my lowers, and some mullioned doors. For anyone that is interested in vendors outside of Scherr's, I have found in my search of custom doors, that most vendors will bore the hinge cups for you. The boring pattern is Pattern B, with 5mm from the edge, and 3" to the center top and bottom--the Blum pattern for the Blum hardware that IKEA uses. The only difference is the size of the two holes flanking the cup. Standard Blum is 8mm and IKEA is 5mm. You can order the standard Blum Inserta hardware for frameless cabs, and it works with the IKEA cabinets just fine. I have both hinges, and they look exactly the same, except for the size of the pin holes. You can also specify the cup boring only and then drill your own pin holes. I did note that posters on ikeafans had no problems with the larger holes and IKEA hardware, as the 35mm cup is the one that really holds the door. IIRC, they had used Maplecraft USA custom doors....See More11/11/20 update--IKEA availability of kitchen boxes & doors
Comments (20)Char @ Scherr's Speaking as someone who has looked at your product very closely and who has thought about using your line of doors for IKEA boxes, what would be extremely helpful for me would be if in each of the door styles in the various materials you could just have a basic price comparison listing. That way, for example, I would be able to think pricewise do I want laminate or painted or which of the real real wood species. So, under each type of material and style of door you could have a chart stating the price of a 15" x 30" door, a 12" x 24" door etc. A customer could then quickly make some decisions about which style, finish and material would most closely fit her budget. I think all of us realize that it would be way too difficult to have every price for every possible custom permutation laid out. I would also think that you could save a lot of staff time that is currently spent just answering simple customer inquiries about pricing in general....See MoreRepair IKEA sektion cabinet box
Comments (11)Now that I am retired and can actually focus on this issue, it is solved. Small clamps could squeeze the tiny gaps shut. I used regular, runny superglue at each tiny crack and the liquid wicked back. I put waxed paper around the glued area and my husband clamped it, then we went on to the next until done. After a couple hours, I removed everything, used 600 grit sandpaper to remove any excess and it looked much better. Then, I used a Q-tip to apply a bit of white oil paint and the area is sealed, fixed and we can move on....See MoreMittens Cat
