Bulging in my wall

I am about 4 months into my new house that I bought as a new construction from a tract builder. I've got a one year warranty. Looking for some explanation as to what is going on here before I write an uneducated letter.

I noticed this bulge in my wall. I am guessing it is where two pieces of drywall meet. Maybe the 2x4 behind is warped? I dunno. I don't think it was like that when I first moved in, but I could of missed it. It is hard to catch everything, and I hardly ever use the guest bathroom.

What's it look like to you and what goes into repairing it properly?

Notice the line upward from the front right shower edge to the ceiling. and the bulge towards the ceiling.

Also, I checked on a ladder, feeling from ceiling to floor for soft spots. It was all hard and felt like any other spot on the wall. No wetness or sign of water.

I may not be seeing what you're talking about, but it doesn't look all that bad to me. The drywall hangers might have laid the mud on a little thickly there.

I suppose it could be a warped 2x4. That seems to be the default condition for the cheap garbage dimensional lumber used in most new houses these days. From what I've seen on job sites, so many boards arrive from the lumberyard warped, curved, twisted, split, and/or knot-infested that I don't know how builders ever manage to get anything plumb. At least old houses have their age as an excuse.

Hard to tell from the picture, but it could be a stud pushing into the room. It also could be that movement is pushing the two drywall boards together and since they can only go out, that is where they are going. The fix is to cut out the bulge and patch it.

Hello - the bulk of this post is older, but hopefully you guys can still give me some advice. We recently moved to Chicago and are renting a house - 2 days after we moved in we noticed a bulge in one of the walls. We own our house in San Francisco, and we've done a lot of work on it, but it's a framed house, so we have no experience with brick. My dad's a structural engineer in Eastern Europe - I sent him the pictures, and he said: break your lease/move out. Now, he has lots of experience, but might not be relevant. The house was built in 1890, and several parts were added/remodeled since, as late as 2005. We contacted the property management company, and they said they'll pass the info to the owner, but there's been no response for several days. Does this look dangerous? Should we move out?

i have really learned to love my plaster walls. it is a material unbelievably superior to drywall in terms of sound resistance, durability, and literally giving your house structure. it blows my mind that anyone would rip out plaster and replace it with drywall. ranting aside (i know you didn't suggest such a thing!); the trade-off is that the walls are rarely perfectly uniform and repairing them requires a fair amount of patience and knowledge of rarely used products. youtube fortunately offers a wealth of information on using plaster washers or even injecting adhesive. people have come up with some pretty creative ways to deal with plaster. these are projects and you should give yourself appropriate time and prepare your workspace accordingly. it would be easy to spend a couple weekends getting it right. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYSQBH5rbmU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zuj_1jhizt4

thanks for your advice. yes, i had already been reading all of the questions and inputs of others on this site about their bulging walls and was surprised at how common the problem is with older homes. i will follow up to have their engineers check it out eye to eye. i am sure my home does not already have a star bolt. i was actually the one who saw the change in my walls at the interior of the foyer as the wood door frame had separated from the tile within the past year. that is how i got a structural engineer involved. i was just confused with the vast difference in contractors opinions regarding the number of star bolts to use. i will get another engineer to confirm any work. thanks again. i'll keep you's posted. shirley

In Bardstown, Kentucky, there is a home owned by a relative of Stephen Foster, where he wrote "My Old Kentucky Home". This home has large metal Stars on four sides of the home. Being from Texas, I asked about the stars. Turns out there were cables going through the house which turminated through the stars. The cables were threaded for some distance on both ends. The cables and stars were used to pull together buldging brick walls. Many older brick homes built in the early 20th century and earlier were actually three courses of brick. The outer and inner walls were vertical and an inner course was horizontal. You need to consider how the house is constructed to determine a fix.

Could be a bad stud, but most likely this is a bad seam. Looks like the transition point between waterproof backer board and reg sheetrock which should be pass the shower stall. Being there the shower steam and moisture penetrates the paint and drywall tape starts to show signs of failure... If this is the transition point a fiberglass tape should have be used in wet locations.

It will get worst with time if not corrected.
